rear end damage and now rust on the boot lip?

  1. #1
hi there all, accidentally reversed into a tree the other day (silly i know) and bent the boot lip in (bit on the car). i garage hammered it back out so my boot still shuts properly but now the area is starting to get rusty. see pic below.

its only been a week and you can see the extent of it so what should i do? if i leave it will it cause a serious rust issue? would a bit of hammerite over the top of it cure the issue or should i sand it all back and repaint it?

thanks in advance and sorry for the slightly burry pic

never just paint over rust because it will carry on rusting underneath the paint, sand it/grind it down to remove the rust first

That needs to go to a bodyshop to be sorted, the garage has made a pigs ear of that job.

yeh im gona get a quote 2day on fixing this at a body shop. ive sanded it all down now anyway and depending on the quote will stick some hammerite over it for nw 2 stop the rust issue

Wire brush it back to clean rust free metal and give it a good few coats of paint

It should only be surface rust if its only a week old, but make sure it's very clean

if you'll already sanded it to bare metal it'll just rust again! Spray it with wd40 or alike just to coat it till you work out what to do as it should come off with degreaser. No bodywork expert though!

As said you want to get rid of all the current rust and get back to metal. Get some paint to protect from more rust, a specialist probably wouldent cost to much as this doesent seam like a big job Tbh.

update: got some black hammerite on it and it seems 2 have sorted it. gona get in booked in the next week or 2 in a bodyshop - given me a rough quote of £25 per hour and it should take between 2-4 hours which aint bad
