Hi need some help and advice I've just brought a strut to replace mine on my vtr. I've noticed that the damper nut is rounded off inside. The problem is will I be able to undo it as it's got a standard spring on so I need to put my lowering spring on off my old strut cheers

Sorry but, if your not going to be using one of the struts, can u not just hash it off(cut it,bash it) and then just use the other one?

Im confused by the original question, are you saying you have a damper with standard spring to replace the existing damper but you need to put the lowering spring on the new damper first, you are struggling though because the new damper has a rounded off thread on top?

Hi sorry if I have not explained it very good. Im wanting to replace my hole strut due to a bad wheel bearing and warped hub and lots of knocks and bangs . So I picked up a new strut today and I've noticed that the the top of the damper where u put the torx bit is rounded off. I cant just swop it how it is because my car is lowered and the strut I've brought as a standard spring on. So will I be able to ido this rounded torx bit or will it just spin when a undo the bolt,

So basically you want to undo the top mount on the strut but the nut on the nut is shagged?
Get some spring compressors on the spring to release the tensioner and get some siltons or mole grips on it as first port of call. That or carefully get away the nut so you can remove everything and then reuse your damper from your previous strut?

If the nut on the top of the damper is rounded off, I think the best bet would be to use the torx bit that's the next size down (can't remember what size), and literally hammer the f*ck out of the torx bit on top of the knackered nut to try and wedge it around the nut, and then undo the nut

Failing that, it might have to be a saw/angle grinder or a chisel and hammer job..... me and a mate once literally spent all day trying to get one off with a chisel and hammer lol so if it resorts to that then it will be hard work

People seem to do these things up to silly tight, theres no need. If you are skillful a dremel with a cutting wheel will cut the nut off without damaging the thread
