Urgent help needed. - Engine running really rough/no power

  1. #1
Hi all, after some advice if at all possible!

Driving home last night, got fuel then around 15 miles later car lost alot of power and started making a horrible noise from the engine, very loud, almost like the centre pipe had fallen off. I suspected the engine was running on 2 or 3 clyinders from the loss of power and the deep sound.

Pulled over and popped bonnet, couldnt see much other than the engine had some very unormal virbations. Eventually got it home and left it for the night.

Exactly the same thing happening this morning, loud horrible deep noise from engine, no power at all struggle to get to 45mph. Car is very rough when on idle and if left for around 30 secs will stall. Also all my dials stopped working this morning. At first i thought maybe i put diesil in, i doubt it but checked fuel receipt, no not that.

I then changed the coil pack, started car and it fired up fine, all 4 cylinders running nice and smooth! I then let her tick over for 10 mins, all fine, then few revs nice and clear, i then disconnected battery, for a few mins and this fixed the dials. Yay i thought problem fixed.

On way to work this morning the problem is back, but worse, engine really does not want to rev at all, no matter how gentle or hard i am with the throttle, sounds much like its running on two cylinders? No power, loud horrible noise. Also EML is on and off now. at first i thought this was due to the unburnt fuel in the engine, but now its pretty clear its not.

Any idea's? car in question is a MK2 VTR.

    Cheers Jordan.

When was the last time it was serviced e.g spark plugs etc?

Might sound a bit stupid but is the coilpack defo plugged in properly and screwed down to the engine tight? And does it have a coilpack cover on? If not then moisture could of got to the coilpack and wrecked it

Is it a new coil pack or second hand because it could of been a faulty coil pack to start with then the second 1 u put in could have been faulty 2

Sounded like pipe had dropped off? Aka like a tank or exhaust blowing? One of the plugs could of worked its way lose and spat itself out check all the plugs happened to me before plug not been tight enough and it unscrewed itself til it popped out

Didn't read all of your post but you changed the coil pack and it fixed it for a while? Sounds like its along those lines then if changeing it fixed it even if it was for a while but check the plugs anyway

Really!? Never knew this! Thank's mate, might pop down soon.

So strange, drove the car around 60 miles today, im sure its a problem with fueling, as it drives fine when your using around 20/25% throttle or less, soon as you try any more it looses power and starts missing on a cylinder or two :/

maybe injectors could do with a clean also could be a blocked fuel filter or dodgy fuel pump

after long issues with my car finnally fixed my problem with restrictions. 3 injector had no fuel on it, changed it over... started really rough after a quick diagnostic misfire on injector 3. the plug wasnt in properly. took all apart again, swapped 3 and 4 over again made sure plugs properly inn. started up fine, no rough idle. no eml and no stalling.

well and my fuel cable wasnt clipped properly either. that caused car to cut out haha.

maybe check injectors, clean them, possible fuel pump and filter change.

Could you get it across to Stevington? I'll take a look over it for you. We have a Snap-on diagnostics gizmo too, although it sounds like it might be a more obvious fault than that.
