Dash lights flashing on and off - VW Polo 1.4 sport content

   The dashboard lights (when you turn your lights on to luminate the dash) on a friends 1.4 tdi sport polo intermittantly flash on...then blip off then come back on again.
   
   Also before the powersteering and the engine died and seems to be part of the problem sometimes, yet the alternator is charging the battery as usual.
   
   What could be causing this intermittant problem any ideas?

   Hi mate i had this exact same problem on a saxo so you could test this on his car. Im putting my money on the earths that are connected onto and around the engine bay. My garage was in for three days and not even the expensive diagnostic machines could tell what it was i then discovered it was a loose corroded earth. Check that the earth tips and bolts arnt worn away. As for dim lights this should be a symptom of it as its not sensing a strong earth. As for dim lights i had this too but my was down to a worn out alt get the car running and probe the + and - with a multimeter if it reads less than 14v then you have a battery or alt issue.
