Emissions Problem

Well lad's, just brought the saxo for the NCT test tonight and it failed on emissions!! I had trouble getting it to pass at the start of the year aswell and i spent hundreds on it to try sort the problem, i got new lambda, cat, all new sensors, changed inlet manifold, put on standard airbox, changed ECU, tried adjusting the timing on the pulleys, even tried higher octane petrol and other emissions stuff and still kept failing, 14 times i had it on the emissions machine before it passed the last thing i changed was the plugs, there was iridiums in it but they were BKR8 and found out was meant to be BKR6 so i threw in a standard set and brought it back and it barely passed, the lad had to keep it reving for about 10mins for the emissions to come down, so since then all i did was put a decat on which i changed back last night for the test so theres only about 50miles on the cat since last test!

Its failing on the CO reading on high and low idle, limit on low is 0.50 and its reading 0.58 and high limit is 0.30 but the car is reading 0.66.
What i found everytime i had it at the garage checking the emissions was that if i bring the car for a spin and really reddin it out to the last and come back and put it on the machine straight away the emissions are absolutely perfect, they couldnt actually go any lower the lad in the garage said, but leave it idle for a while or turn it off for a while then start it and check again there gone back up.

im on the verge of just gettin rid of the car im so sick of it at this stage, ive spent more money trying to get the emissions right than i spent buying the car!! has anyone any ideas as to what it could be before i have a breakdown!!??

    poor cat efficiency?

ive had 3 cats on it!! There was a brand new one on the car when i first bought it, sticker and all still on, but after failing the test i thought might be faulty or a chaep one so i got a second hand one which had come off a car that had just passed the test, it still failed so in the end i bought a brand new one myself which is whats on it now!

Find a better garage? The cat is hardly life threatening I don't even need my cat on the car where I get mine tested since its decated

It has to go to an NCT centre over here, and the garage is just where i was getting it checked the whole time after changing all the different parts trying to get it right before the NCT

Been remaped? Or any breathing mods?

no map, and i tried another ECU aswell just to make sure it wasnt chipped either.. theres just an enclosed induction kit, but i also tried the standard airbox on and it made no difference

    Does it burn oil?
  11. #11
And lambda on the machine is about 1 as well? O2 is usually high when theres alot of fuel in there are the hydrocarbons high as well?

well in about 1500 miles i havnt had to top up the oil atall...

Lambda reading is 1.01 which is between the 0.97-1.03 limit and the HC is 129ppm and the limit is 200ppm..

Like you said the emissions were clean after a good drive, Could you not go for a long drive before the test and leave it running?

Not know any friendly garages that will put the probe up another car for a £10?

Thats what i tried last week, i waited until exactly the appoint time to drive in, but you have to leave the car outside and bring the keys in when checking in and then they left the car outside another 15mins before they brought it in

Oh believe me if i could slip one of them even €100 to pass it i would, work out a hell of a lot cheaper than changing things to try get it to pass

just back from the NCT and it passed got a new bosal uni-cat and threw in a shot of dipetane and the emissions were 0.02 on low and 0.03 on high idle..... time to get cammin now
