Battery/Alternator?

   Mk2 Golf, won't start by its own accord but will with a battery pack. Turn it off and it won't start again.
   
   Voltmeter is erratic with the car off (Anywhere between 12-8V) but is a perfect 13.5V when the car is running.
   
   Fubar'd battery?

   Measure the voltage of the battery when its not been running if its below 12.2 volts its fooked.

   Its erratic between 8 - 12 Volts

   Try charging the battery up overnight mate,then see what happens.

   If its showing over 13v with engine running and less without then its defo your battery fooked
