Manifold glowing slightly

  1. #1
This normal on a stainless 4-2-1? only noticed it tonight slightly when in the dark, concerned it could be a touch lean. It wasn't very red just enough so you could see it, more evident on 1 and 2 rather than 3 and 4

Yes mate it is,this is why people sometimes have alternator problems(melted wires etc)

If its anything like a raceland the metal thickness and quality is really poor and thin. Most cheap manifolds glow.

I think its also down to the thickness of the stainless used, I imagine the one I'm using is quite thin. Might go about making a alternator heatshield now

Might check mine tonight after ive been out.. see if it has a slight glow.

    lightweight ftw.

they are stupidly hot of course it will glow after a good run, looks good imo

Im talking about at idle though more or less 2-3 minutes from starting
  9. #9
    sounds lean..you got rallye inlet?

mine was glowing once when i had an air leak on the inlet...was bright orange on idle

I had an 106 XSI, with Raceland 4-2-1 mani, and it glow lightly in the dark, on idling. Was running fine tho.

standard VTR inlet, dont think theres any air leaks as the idle is fine. I'll check that out, I'm running a 3 bar FPR when the VTR one is 3.5, reckon that might have an effect?
Dont get me wrong its not glowing madly, theres just a slight cherry hue to it, my camera cant even pick it up

Do all the 4 branches glow equally?

lower fuel pressure than standard is never going to be good lol

Thing is though its using rallye injectors so with some help from a userhere worked out a 3.0 bar would be best. Having said that ive just put a 3.5 bar one in and its still the same.
And no blackie, number 1 is the one that glows. Suspect a leaky injector as spraying brake cleaner round it makes the engine stutter slightly.
Pulled the injectors out now so am having a look

Right injectors out and in again, one of the seals on number 1 was marginally smaller so put a spare larger one on and so far no glowing. Will probably need to remove this 3.5 bar fpr though, the pops and bangs are more prominent now even on light throttle loads when moving the car out of the garage

Just out of interest and slightly off topic, does any one have a similar spec 8v that still pops and bangs like mad with the cat still in place, albeit with no mid silencer?

Drive it harder. Can get all stainless manifolds to glow if you try hard enough.

Back on the 3 bar FPR now, still get a bit of glowing. Pulled the plugs and to be honest they dont look as if its running lean, infact if anything a touch rich. The 3.5 bar FPR overfuels massive, tonnes of unburt fuel exiting the exhaust and you can literally smell it

At work we get the manifolds to 1100 degrees we cant go any higher because the cat brick will burn and catch alight...
