Fuel Gauge Failure

  1. #1
    Hi All

I have just had a new Multi Function Relay put on my Mk2 Saxo VTR (51)

For some reason when I start my car, the fuel gauge seems to work, I know this because I know the fuel light should be about on half way down the bottom block.

Then seconds later, it shoots up to the top, then back down again and eventually sits flat at the bottom. No light comes on when it does this.

My original problem was that I wasnt getting fuel to the engine, since getting that fixed, It then didnt send enough or it sent too much. So my car kept jumping and cutting off.

Now thats fixed, this is my newest problem. I have looked at a few of the threads on here but none relate to a new Relay being installed.

I just about know how to find the sensor, I believe its under the seat, the black plug - But surely if it was the sensor then the gauge would still work but just be giving wrong readings?

    Thanks,
    Luke

On the fuel gauge sender in the fuel tank there is a resistor which when faulty will give an incorrect reading.Mk1 saxo`s are a seperate unit,mk2`s the sender is incorporated into the fuel pump unit.See this pic http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/96-99-CITR...item43aa72248b The black rectangular unit on the end is the resistor & can`t be changed seperately mate.

Are right, do you think that this will have shot since putting a new relay in? Just very strange with it working yesterday.

It does give me a reading before it sends it crazy, Im going to put some fuel in at lunch and see if that reading is accurate.

Thanks for this, pretty cheap too for used one i guess. Are they easy to fit myself?

    Hi there

I was wondering if any one can help me
I have a vtr and the fuel gauge is also faulty. The needle doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the gauge when empty it jus goes to the top of the last line then runs out on me. Does any one know what this is as the gauge itself in the dash board is working.

    Thanks

I don`t think a new relaywould`ve cause the problem.Easy to fit remove the back seat prise off the plastic cover. Then theres a plastic locking ring, take a screwdriver(flat blade)tap the ridged part of the ring then it unscrews.Get a bucket ready disconnect any wiring then pop the old sender in the bucket. Its a reverse proceedure to refit, note though on the locking ring tap it round until the 2 arrows match up(you`ll see what I mean)

Only other thing I can think of is to disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hr,it resets the gauges.

I just had this problem (99 1.1i saxo) on fuel pump under rear seats there is a arm float which there is some little pins on the side, they burn out, and give faulse readings, what i did t was get one from scrap yard and simple change the whole unit, becareful with the piping on top of the fuel pump, the hardend plastic is very very brittal!! Due to exspirence of braking two! Lol, just either live with it or change it kind regards jap
