Still not starting after gearbox swap?

  1. #1
I've had it on jump leads which made it crank like an absolute beast, checked the fuel pump relay to see if it clicks: it does, the FI primes but then after about 4 attempts of starting it doesn't prime anymore, during the swap we didn't touch any of the injectors or fuel lines or ignition system, all fuses are in tact - I just really want to get it started and have it running now

Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance

EDIT: Just been back out and checked to see if the relay still clicks now that the FI has stopped priming again and it's not clicking anymore - it did this on saturday last weekend, primed the first few attempts but then stopped. I had it on jump leads and this didn't get it to start priming again..

the key icon is flashing on the dash it looks like? if so, immobiliser. Engine will turn but not fire
  3. #3
    Whats that flashing light?
  4. #4
oil level warning light (yellow/3rd one in from left)

  5. #5
Ok well if its that check the oil but anyway, are you getting fuel and spark?
I'd wire the pump to be on constantly (run a 12v feed to it from the battery) and try it. Then if no joy take the coilpack and plugs out but leave it connected to the plugs and see if it sparks on turning

yeah my mate kev the practical bastard said he's 99% certain it's a spark issue but I was convinced on fuel not getting through. Off to work now, will check for spark when I get in

what could we have done to cause ignition problems I wonder?

Bad earths cause a weak / intermittent spark. Or could of knocked the crankshaft sensor..

I know it sounds too simple but its a easy mistake.. You got 2 earths on the gearbox and 1 on the chassis?

I had 2 on the chassis and 1 on the box.. and it wouldn't spark, I thought a earth was a earth.. But clearly not

I'll get the car back up on stands (AGAIN) and check the crankshaft sensor.. There's definitely atleast one earth on the gearbox (on top just to the right of the bell housing).

Does the other earth connect to the same place?
  9. #9
    Yeah 2 earths there

Where abouts is the crank sensor? Just noticed this plug on the front of the gearbox (towards the front of the car)
  10. #10
    That is it.

And there's your problem - it's not plugged in lol

Just been and checked my wiring, And the earths don't go on that bolt - they're on the gearbox but under the battery tray.

Please tell me it's just fired up?
  12. #12
What saxova said it will not start with that plugged in
  13. #13
Ah right @ gearbox earths, thanks dude. And as for the crank sensor, where should I trace to/from in order to find the plug? Couldn't see it hanging loose anywhere (and I'm not embarrassed in the slightest lol). Thanks dude!

Haha - always turns out to be the simple things that catch us out.

follow that green / yellow earth you pictured - the crank shaft sensor wiring comes out of the same part of the loom as that.

2 wires black push on clip type plug

You lovely lovely people, thanks so much - just arrived at work so will give it a look and report back tonight.
  16. #16
hah just read this, you'll be needing that crank sensor plugged in buddy. Nice easy fix, its always something daft like this but you can spend ages looking for it
  17. #17
lol cheers lads, it's always the small things eh?

p.s. I'll probably be home about 3-4pm so will report back, probably with a video if it fires
  18. #18
    Lol! :d

Fucking YESlads!! It lives! Thank you for all your help! Only one minor issue now, where abouts is the speedo sensor? My speedo isn't working lol
  21. #21
    Gratz

And at the back of the box, grey clip type plug lol
  22. #22
on the back, pretty much opposite
  23. #23
Did you plug anything back in?
  24. #24
didn't have time before my trackday yesterday so just had to drive without speedo for the day. Will get on it next weekend as I'm working away again all week..

New issues: it won't start again. came off the track and back in the paddock towards the end of the day yesterday - all running fine, turned it off. 10 mins later tried to fire it up, nothing. Starter not even clicking, but all headlights, electric windows all work fine - bump started it and it fired perfectly/drove all the way back to york fine.

Thinking possibly an earth. Any ideas where to look guys?
