Hi there, ive just put a new Gearbox in my mk1 vts, and the gearbox I bought was out a mk2 vts, and now the ratios are longer and acceleration isnt as good, it does over 70 in 2nd and 100mph in 3rd, it use to only do about 66-67 in 2nd and about 90 in 3rd, are the rations different in the mk2 vts boxes? Or is it not a vts box that ive been sold? Im a bit unhappy about it tbh as I loved the acceleration of it but now its just not the same, it use to spin the wheels no bother in 1st once it hit 4500rpm but now it struggles and sometimes doesnt spin the wheels at all and seems to take alot longer to get out of 1st.

#4Check the code on the box and refer to the guide on this site/106OC, it isn't unheard of for people to swap in a diesel box or vtr box when they break one.
Not sure what box you had before doing 67mph in second as no standard box will do that to the best of my knowledge but your speedo could be out -
#5Ive watched videos on YouTube and the mk1 vts certainly does more than 30 in 1st on them videos and on mine, that chart seems to be totally wrong compared to what my Speedo was reading and on every other vts on youtube....am thinking that it may be a diesel box, where is the code on the box mate?
-
#6The chart is for 6250 rpm...
-
#7Ahh that explains it mate cheers
mines revs to 7250
-
#8My bad I thought you said your car was a VTR, sounds like you have a VTR box fitted mind but went from a diesel box?
-
#9The code is here (flat part towards the lower left of the picture in red) on the box, gonna be a cunt and steal a picture :
-
#10Thanks mate, so there is absolutley no difference between mk1 and mk2 no? So the vts a saw on youtube doing 100 in 3rd must not have had a standard gearbox? Thanks mate
-
#11I dont believe there is but then some say there are two specs of VTR box so its difficult to know
-
#12Al check the code tomorrow and if its a vtr box its getting taken back out and sent back, the car just isnt the same with it, use to fly out of first gear, now it seems to take a second or 2 longer which feels like an eternity compared to what it use to be like

#13An xsi or rallye box might be interesting if you can source one but they are hard to find
-
#14Whats the best box for accelertion Thats what I want the most, not to botherd about top speed
-
#15I'd say 1400 xsi is what most people who want acceleration fit but usually end up with VTS boxes or s2 rallye boxes if they are lucky as rallye/xsi units are rare now. s1 rallye is just silly short for a road car in my opinion. I had one on my 8v and it would spin up my 888s easily in first. Would work better with a higher rev limit as in regards to top speed but with the extra power and torque of the 16v I think it'd do your head in first and probably second
-
#17So theres a difference between the mk1 and mk2 vtr box, but mk 1 and mk2 vts box are the same? Sounds like I have a mk2 vtr as it does 100mph in 3rd
-
#18Are the 1.1 gearboxes strong enough to cope with the extra power that a vts has? As they look look like they will improve acceleration slightly and wouldnt mind sticking on of them on it as long as it would cope
-
#19i cant remember what one is shorter or what one is longer... but it really aint much tbh...
yeah i think alot of people run the 1.1 boxes in their vts's -
#20I've ran a 1.1 box for 25k miles.. Hard launches / general abuse.. still as good as new
.
-
#21People run them and get away with them, but no, they're not strong enough to support a VTS. A VTS box is barely strong enough to support a VTS - they're all made of chocolate tbh.Quote:Are the 1.1 gearboxes strong enough to cope with the extra power that a vts has? Have mechanical sympathy and you might get away with it as others have done. -
#22Is the acceleration much different with a 1.1 box mate? Thanks for the replies
-
#241.1 gearbox = 4.268 final drive
16v gearbox = 3.938 final drive
(higher final drive is for acceleration)
1.1 gearbox top speed with 7250rpm limiter = 144.4mph
16v gearbox with 7250rpm limiter = 141.2mph
So you actually get more top speed from the 1.1 box. But it's only marginally.
Both boxes sit @ 3500rpm @ 70mph in 5th, Just that the 1.1 box has the better final drive.

#25everyday is a school day - I stand corrected
-
#26thanks mate, does the box just slip on? as in will my vts driveshafts ect.. fit on no problem?
thanks mate -
#27shall be putting a 1.1 in my vts tomorrow and getting rid of that horrid vtr boxQuote:1.1 gearbox = 4.268 final drive
