Only Running On 3 Cylinders....(Might have cracked this M18 Lambda Sleeve)

  1. #1
    Hi Guys, Any help appreciated.
A friend of mine is selling a VTR cheap, I am 100% buying it but it is only running on 3 Cylinders, he reckons it is something to do with the straight through exhaust system fitted.
The lambda sensor is fitted to the manifold and he says that there is another sensor missing which should be in the exhaust, Now im not the most mechanically minded person but im not 100% sure what he is going on about.
Now he seems to think that because this sensor is missing that this is making the car run too rich and due to this one of valves has clogged. his words not mine.
Any help would be appreciated guys i shall be picking the car up next week and would need to get it sorted straight away.
If it sounds like it could be something else please let me know.
    Thanks all.

Ummmm, surely if its only running on 3 cylinders it's going to be either sparks, or ht leads/coilpack? I don't know which a Vtr has.

Could have either depending on the year. Most likely spark

its an x reg vtr, i believe its a mk2 with mk1 engine.
  5. #5
Probably a coil pack engine then I'd say, silvertop 90bhp

yeah i think so, reckon thats the best thing to do first then?
is there anyway to check if the original is working ok or not?

Take the coil off, Pull the plugs out, put them back in the coil pack and see if they all spark on cranking. Obviously be careful of any fuel vapours getting out of the combustion chamber

If you think it might be leads best way to check is just swap 2 leads around one off the missfiring cylinder and one off a good one if the missfire swaps cylinders its a lead, check your fuel and spark if its neither of them could be compression issues wet and dry test basic and easy but then if your still stuck probably garage is your best bet.

id say coil, are you sure is running on 3 not 2 as usilly when the overhead coil brakes u lose 2 sparks not 1
  13. #13
    Anything after 98 iirc

Will have coil over plugs, its a "mk1 engine" but not an early mk1 engine.. Those are black top with pack and leads
  14. #14
Its a cross over engine then if its a mk2 body mk1 engine on a x reg.

As said will be spark plug or coil pack, Even a blocked injector.

    damaged wiring is likely.

I have been looking into this some more today and spoken to the owner. Its not running on 3 cylinders but is just running lumpy.
an M18 Lambda Sleeve is needed - I have only found this at Kam racing but is £15, seems a little high considering what it actually is, anyone know anywhere better i could get this from?
