K & N Air Filter Help.

  1. #1
Thinking of buying a K & N Air Filter off another saxo, i was wondering if it made any difference to the car during the winter and summer months and whether or not it would affect the life span of any other engine parts.

    Thanks.

if its a cone filter it will just make a lot of noise with no real power gains. however if you want that then just make sure its placed towards the front of the engine bay so it gets as much cold air as possible
  3. #3
or mount it infront of the radiator like i did

Make sure you clean and oil it properly and keep to a correct cleaning schedule. It should then do a half decent job of protecting the engine.

useless, noisy heat soak sponge. Get a greencotton instead.

^^^ mount a heat shield and have an air feed, or relocate at the front

which will do exactly the same thing, if its isn't a panel filter

so are you saying the k&n are no good full stop? how much do the racelands go for second hand? still cant locate one tho
    cheers

You cannot locate a Raceland as the company does not exist any more. They just closed up shop one day.

You are not really missing anything as they simply copied other designs and made a cheap but inferior quality version off it.

The induction kit they copied was the Simota aeroform induction kit. The Simota is a vastly better kit.

The K&N will suffer heat soak when the car is static or at very low speed, but you are unlikely to notice much of a difference when actually driving normally as there is a large airflow under the bonnet. There may be some gain though by having a more direct feed.

There are nothing wrong my K&N filters in my view, i've used them in all my cars. Some people prefer different brands or materials but the main thing to avoid is the heat soak of just an open cone filter hanging around in the bay. Not that theres too much of an issue with that in a saxo bay as said before, but some cold air ducting is cheap and easy to set up

think i will stick with the k&n for now. with plenty of cold air feeds

just took a few snaps of the induction on my vts, to be fair it doesnt look too bad but i will probably do something about the cold air feeds. one currently runs in through a hose from the front with an extension on. and another goes down to the front splitter. has anyone tried fitting a scoop so to speak? something like the gruppe m for hondas? heres a pic

When you say 'prefer' you mean 'think they prefer' lol

there's no noticeable difference between any air filter other than noise

Servicing is simpler and much easier too as well with an aftermarket, £40 K&N will last a lifetime with cleaning.
I did read though, in particularly harsh environments that paper elements are meant to give better filtration/less susceptible to clogging with dust but this is for desert/expedition style off roading etc

    This!

if you want to spend 100+ on an air filter then go ahead probably like 0.3bhp difference between a expensive enclosed and a cheap cone and cold air feed.

ive had BMC, Raceland and now have a cone filter close to the slam panel.

tell you now theres barely an difference between the 3, the cone is the noisiest, fits the easiest and IMO looks the best in the engine bay.

hence my greencotton suggestion, they don't clog up easily
