Important! : Rear wheel has gone weird.. Am I going to die?.. xD

Hi.. I have a problem I hope someone can help me with. When my saxo goes around left corners I get a grinding noise coming from the back. I'm not bad with cars (for a girl) and thought it was the wheel bearing. My brother jacked the car up and shook the wheel but it had no movement at all. Then we noticed the inside of the wheel arch was polished clean and the inside wall of the tyre had been rubbing against it when I go around corners! :O That's the noise I could hear!

What next? If the wheel doesn't move then surely it can't be the wheel bearing? Even the wheel looks like its at a slight angle (my bro's words, not mine).

He said it could be the hub that holds the bearing on but after the shake test I'm clueless so I really don't know what it could be.

Sounds like you need a new rear beam to me. If the wheel is at a slight angle the trailing arm bearings are probably shot

    Near beam time im afraid.

Thanks!.. =) Is there a risk of the wheel coming off? I know this can happen with a normal wheel bearing. It doesn't make any noise if I take it easy. Or should I park up till I can get it looked at? I have a really important journey to make tonight and its only a 30 mile round trip.

Also, how much would a rear beam from a scrap yard cost and how much to get it fitted? I'm skint as well as dumb. xD

Its not very likely that your wheel is just going to drop off its still held on quite well but its only going to get worse and more rubbing on your wheel arches, basically its the bearings in the beam that go bad which causes it to lean. 2nd hand beams can go from £50 upwards probably looking at £80-200ish for a vtr beam (didn't notice what model you have) or i think its around £350 for a refurbed one. not too sure on fitting prices..

no risk of wheel falling off but big risk of blowouts.

stand behind the car. The wheels should be straight, e.g, at 90 degrees to the road. If they are leaning at all, then you can safely say you need a beam.
Expect about £100 from a scrap yard and £100 for a garage to fit it.
it will get worse, but wont drop off. dont go much over 30mph though and avoid putting lots of weight in the car, i would be concerned a blow out is on the cards if its rubbing.

As above, my local scrappy does them for 65 if you take them off yourself or iirc 85 if they take them off, but theres no garantee that the saxo your getting it off isnt in there for the same reason.....

Thanks everyone! The wheel was fine on my journey. It only touches if I corner hard so I drove easy. My saxo is the furio one with no abs and a scrap yard has quoted me £120 + vat for the beam. A garage quoted me £140 for the labour. Most importantly, I'm alive! xD

thats not a bad price really.

you could get the beam abit cheaper tho.

if you buy premium membership you can go in the forsale section on here, good recond axles come up for sale now and then and will 9 times out of 10 be cheaper on this forum than anywhere else!

    hope that helps!

Blowouts is defo a risk with arch rubbing... You really dont want it i experienced it only doing 45 in my old mini clubman

Could ask the garage if they'll do a foreigner. My local would have done mine for £70 but the scrappy wanted £250 for the beam!

i think you could get a beam for about £40 less if you looked around a bit more
    especially a drum beam

most probs someone on here selling one

I found a beam for £80 in the end and a nice fella fitted it for £65 in the end. I'm one happy lady!

Not gonna lie, it's probably cause you have a nice rack. Nice people don't exist.

Glad it's sorted though. Nice price.
