knock coming from engine

  1. #1
When I change from 1st to 2nd there is a knock from the engine which I'm sure is the upper engine mount. There is also a bit of play when I shake the engine back and forwards. There is no oil coming out from it but the buffers look knackered.

What I want to know is can I just change the buffer and it will be sorted or will the buffer being knackered made the mount deteriorate?

    Thanks

your better off changing the whole mount for peace of mind

I had this problem with my old VTR, it was the lower engine mount causing the problem, very easy to change, takes 15 mins or so, but dont by cheap ones as they only last a few months or even weeks.

Just check this before you go ahead and change the top engine mount

I'm looking at powerflex lower engine mounts? I guess I just need to look for signs of wear of the bush?

Its hard to spot wear of the lower mount on the car unless its REALLY shagged. Take it off and get a bar in the hole and try and move it around. A powerflex is a no brainer though at £23 or whatever it is.

Yeah they are easy to change just unbolt the old mount from the car and then knock the insides out of the metal housing with something like a chisel or screwdriver then the powerflex one just slides in easily.

Just a heads up the powerflex one does cause some vibrations on idle
