What have I broken?

So, 16v 3 plug engine, there's a pipe that runs from the drivers side wing up by the engine, up and across the top of the cambelt cover, and round into the underneath of the inlet manifold.

Thanks to a really stiff connection (arf) it's snapped off, and now I've got a busted inlet manifold.

What is it for? Is it some sort of emissions / carbon canister affair? In which case can I sack it off and just seal the hole up on the inlet?

The pipe is the one the red arrow points at.

Charcoal canister, yup you can just block and remove it.

is there any gains to blocking it?

Doesnt it stop the tank pressurising too?

Its designed to filter petrol vapours from the tank, through charcoal and then back into the inlet to be burnt off at certain points, as the valve is electronically operated I believe.
I refitted mine but I dont see why it would hurt it you blanked the inlet and vented to atmosphere? Although I personally wouldnt block the pipe
