Removing Cylinder Head / Cam Timing

  1. #1
    Hi,

I'm in the process of stripping down my engine for some preventative maintenance, and to reseal the cam ladders as they're leaking oil.

I've stripped the engine of ancillaries and manfolds, and I've locked the bottom end at TDC with a 5mm allen key.

The two cams are in the position to be locked with 8mm drill bits, but as I'm removing the cams to remove the ladders, I don't need to do this yet do I?

I can just continue stripping down the engine, remove the cams, ladders and rockers, pull the head, fit a new gasket, then when I reseal the cam ladders and refit the cams, at that point I need to make sure they are rotated to the correct locking position and locked in place when I'm ready to refit the timing belt, is that right?

Might sound daft but I'd rather ask a silly question than get something wrong and bin my valvezzzzz.

    Thanks!

personally i would lock the cams take the belt off then turn the crank back 90 degrees, then remove timing pins that way when you refit the cams you can turn the cams to the right orientation without the risk of ramming valves in to pistons

    I like your style.

See, I hadn't thought of that! Thanks mate.
