linkages hitting manifold to cat flange

  1. #1
As title really, but only when using reverse. Not a major problem on a track car but from the fact it clangs and I have to hold it in reverse if I want to back up pisses me off

    Any advice?

Do you have any play in your engine mounts, causing the engine to catch on the CAT mate?
  3. #3
    lower mount on wrong?
  4. #4
Or I suppose you could file down the flange on the CAT so it doesn`t catch?
  5. #5
Nah lower mount is on the right way round, all the other mounts are OEM spec but brand new with the powerflex on the lower. I guess filing it down is the only method then
  6. #6
should not be anywhere near the linkages.
  7. #7
is the downpipe "bent"? like more up angle then it should be??
  8. #8
No seems alright to be honest, runs through the shallow bit of the sump just fine and doest look wonky or touch there. It doesnt have the securing bolt half way down for the gearbox, simply because the manifold doesnt have the bracket for it.

I have this problem after fitting the poly bush type exhaust hangers / rubbers. Pulls the exhaust up more than usual, so get some rattling at certain rpm.

So i'd look at adjusting the exhaust so it sits lower down
  10. #10
I dont think I can adjust it anymore than it is, as the angle and height of the two flanges is dictated by the manifold and how its downpipe exits

This guy had the exact issue I do:

Mine doesnt either. I'll grab a pic tommorow to show the clearance mine has.

Ive got the powerflex lower mount and it had no affect on the downpipe height whatsoever. @ saxova

I know the mounts on right as I had it on upside down before when I did the rallye box a while back, and the exhaust was trying to exit through the golf ball linkage and above.
It literally just clinks the flange now and gets annoying

I mean the nylon type exhaust hangers instead of rubber, so they are slightly tighter - nothing to do with engine mount, but that's powerflex too

Ill have a look at this tomorrow, its always bugged me and now I've got some more time off I can sort it
  15. #15
mine did this with a sportex mani and decat, filed down bits of the linkage and flange, sportex was slightly shit with fitment anyway
  16. #16
I have those aswell... still not like that..
  17. #17
ground the cat flange down today and the shift is now perfect and slick, no clanging or crunching!
  18. #18
i swapped an engine in a VTR, with another VTR lump. when i put it back in it did this. fine when it came out, clanked in reverse when i put t back in.
took the exhaust off and put it back on it didnt do it :/ no idea why it did it tbh.
think the flange was twisted round
  19. #19
the flange on the cat had a high bit that the linkage hit against. Now its slides into a little recess I made. Its nice to feel reverse properly engage, as with the deep gravel on my driveway it kept popping out unless you held it with a bit of force.

Did that sort the vibration also mate?
  21. #21
I had the same problem on vtr when had a new front pipe fitted. I could not get it in reverse at all. Took it back to garage and i think he just bent the bracket back. You could still feel it vibrating tho in reverse. Strange one this as a brand new part should fit straight on. I checked engine mounts and was fine.
  22. #22
Pretty much sorted the vibration out
  23. #23
Did u have any problems with the decat pipe touching the arb
  24. #24
Nope, sounds like your exhaust hangers or other mounts are buggered
  25. #25
Never had problems before with it
  26. #26
I'm ganna remove it all and refit see if I need to make a new bit of exhaust or summing
  27. #27
you surely no ones had the gearbox mount off?
  28. #28
    Nah defo not
  29. #29
must be the manifold, try bending it down a bit
  30. #30
Yh proper annoying thanks for ur advice mate
  31. #31
No problem hope it sorts the issue
