New Head Gasket. Now Fan Won't Kick In?

  1. #1
Had the motor sent in to my local garage for the head gasket to be replaced.
Now they've skimmed the head, new gasket, flushed the system, refilled (oil, coolant), replaced the thermostat and whilst they were at it they replaced the cam belt.

Now, since having it back it has been getting freaking hot.
before it went in, after a long journey it'd comfortably sit juusssst under the half way mark.

now after a 20minute drive its 3/4 up.. so at the moment I'm putting my fans on full and on max heat.. windows open.

realized the fan on the rad isn't kicking in for some unbeknown reason.

Went back to the garage and the guy tested the fan itself.. that works.
he told me to keep an eye on the coolant levels in case there's any air still in the system.

should i wait it out like he's said, or should i rebleed it?
could it be because its a new thermostat (higher temp setting)
    maybe its the relay/sensor?

but it all worked fine before it went in..

Any thoughts on a low dollar method on solving the mystery?

    Cheers

Does the fan come on at above 3/4s?
You shouldn't be fault finding anyway, so take it back to them and get them to sort it

Bleed the coolant if you know how, constant flow should come through each bleed point before closing it.

Is it mk1 or mk2? If mk1 then the thermostat needs bleeding because if there is air in there it does not let it open and go back into the rad which trips the fan to come on when the hot water goes back in the rad

Thats the same for the mk2, the thermostat is still in the same location

Thats right mate but what i mean is on the mk1 the fan switch is on the rad so needs the hot water to go back in the rad to turn on were as mk2 i think is ecu operated

Sweet as, is there a guide on here or youtube for bleeding the system?
I'm not sure where the bleed nipple is.
    Also it's a mk1

    Nice one!

Here is the link to bleeding the car mate.

It's either not bled properly or the coolant temp sensor is faulty it's a known factor! Should be te green connector on top of the therostat housing, Check the sensor on the thermostat housing when it gets to 100c or something like that it should close the ground circuit to activate fan, two wires run into the loom to the ecu 1 is for the temp warning light and 1 is for the activation of the fan i that sensor is faulty the fan won't kick in that's what ur just had to replace on mine

I think that is only the case on a mk2. He has a mk1 were the fan switch is the big blue one or green one on the rad, may be that is faulty.

Is the car over heating when driving or just when stood still??

Because if its when driving its an air lock, if its stood still then its just the fan not coming on which will be that switch on the rad.

Oh my bad Miss read his comment mate, Erm air locks probs the best bet !i would take the car back to the garage and tell them to fix it as they have obviously ripped you off and done a shit job don't do it yourself the at isn't right! It was working when you took it to them so give it back and say sort it out! Don't pay any other money to then either

check the fuse in your fusebox as this is commonly mistaken for being something else. this is a common case for being stuck in traffic and your electric fan is cutting in and out alot. the fan motor starts getting hot and the fan draws more amps so eventually your fuse will pop

    They suggested the fan switch.
I'm doing it myself in the morning. I'll rebleed the system afterwards so im hoping that'll sort it. If it doesn't it's going back. Got a long journey Sunday evening, so I have 2 days to find and fix the fault. Mission Accepted.
More useful info through you guys - compared to the pro's in the garage.
    Top lads. Cheers
