Important! : Urgent!! Lost 1st and 2nd

  1. #1
1st has been a ball ache to get into recently but thought it was just being an old french car

On the way home today i lost 1st... Goes into place too easily (unlike before) but will not engage
Cant even get it into 2nd

Ive got work tomorrow, well not anymore but im aware its the 23rd tomorrow, so no spares for me but im stuck at fucking uni! At this rate i wont be home for xmas

Is it likely to be a linkage or the gears in the box?

Didnt hear any noises at all
  2. #2
Does it have any drive at all?
  3. #3
Check the linkages first port of call
  4. #4
    Drives in 3rd 4th and 5th

Just seen the diagram so will go have a look now
  5. #5
    FAAAACKKKK

No torx drivers with me at uni :/

    Cant check my linkages
  6. #6
    Torx?

Just jack the car up and lie under and look for 3 gear linkages??

    but yours will look like

  7. #7
Just drive it up onto a high curb and slip underneath should give you enough clearance if its not silly lowered
  8. #8
Oh i thought it would be a jobby from inside the car, long day!

Right now i need to move my boot build, get the jack and have a look!

Need to bring my tools to uni i think :/

Will 1 of them not be connected jonge?

Driving in 3rd nearly killed the clutch... ill try not to move it haha
  10. #10
use reverse or get some mates to push you? either way you have the jack now, wont take you 5 minutes to see if the linkages are borked
  11. #11
Right so fuck my life... havent got the wheel brace... so cant get the jack

Mates home from work in a bit so will get him to push it over the kurb
  12. #12
You can look from under the bonnet behind the gearbox you should be able to see the linkage from there m8 mine popped off a few weeks and I lost 1st and 2nd and reverse. I just popped it back on and job done
  13. #13
It'll only come off again but might be enough to get you home if you drive carefully
  14. #14

    All connected
The middle one (from top middle then bottom) moves up and down as well as the obvious movements

Forgot my house mates on a late so will get him to play with the stick while i watch

Which one was it that popped off for you?
  15. #15
Upper middle one I think, but that was due to me not using clips on aftermarket linkages which I resolved. Get your mate to put it in all the gears and see what the linkages do
Is there any crunching when using first and second, and is the clutch properly adjusted?
  16. #16
you will never tell properly until you get under the car and look as Gandi699 said just drive up a high curb and get under
  17. #17
Pushed it over the kurb but couldnt fit underneath :/

Who the fuck said it would be a good idea to lower my car, nearly took the bumper off with the kurb as well

    Reverse still works.

Linkages do look shit, and the main joint is shocking so they need changing regardless of the condition of the box.

SO linkages first, if it works then jobs a gooden, if not im on the search for a box
  18. #18
well if all the linkages are on and everything else looks OK, then start looking elsewhere. Whats it do when you mate moves it? also doesnt he have a jack in his car if hes got one?
  19. #19
When it moves it just looked normal but this bit

is looking a bit dodge, like not moving completely smoothly.

Apart from that nothing out the ordinary.

He hasnt got a car, bros coming tomorrow so will get him to bring my trolley jack
  20. #20
I bet the ball has gone. If its the arm you will have to change well all of it. not that little bit.

    part 2.
  21. #21
Fuck me if i need to change the whole thing this could be getting expensive!

Need to know what it is but aint got a clue!

Looks like im posting in the regional section haha
  22. #22
If its part 2 then you can easily see that from under the car and can also just push it back on.

The gear link system is very un technical and is just metal sticks connecting each other, easy bodge yo see you home.

Clutch/box however is what you really wanna worry about (if there fucked)

Come to think of it, my old saxo suffered these same symtoms and is definately the gear selector arm, just pushes back on..
  23. #23
Its all connected though... nothing thats smacking me in the face thats not connected.

So nothing really perished or wears? Its either connected and working or disconnected and not working?
  24. #24
you can see the golf ball in the pic though, its still on the end of the shaft. it'll generally work if worn - be a bit sloppy mind but providing its not worn down to the size of a pea should be OK

also check the roll pin on the gearbox arm !

  25. #25
The whole system suffers from perishing as the ball joints are rubber..

Have a look under the car (i know its hard) and directly under where your gear stick would be is a ball connecting to a long rod (#1) going towards your gear box, this perishes/pops off.
  26. #26
    Ahh could be that

Ill get it on the jack tomorrow and find out

Unless the ball physically goes missing and falls from the socket it sits within in use I dont see how this can fail, it'll just be sloppy giving a bit more slop in the stick
  28. #28
Ill get a video of the main area tomorrow and as many pics as i can

Will be dark and probs raining though lol
  29. #29
If you can, get the car up on stands and then get underneath and get your mate to pop it into first with the clutch down and see if you can locate it by hand on the box under neath. Slide out from underneath, get him to start it with the clutch down, then bring it up and see if it engages gear or see what the stick does when you move it by hand
  30. #30
I wont have much time at all... probs 10 mins, 15 max.

Ill try my best. After that ill be away from her for about just under 2 weeks

    So im pretty fucked!

Strange i know but i have had these exact symtoms with my old saxo.. It happened under my mums ownership and her local friendly garage used to pop it back on for her, Until one day it went completely as could be the case here, buti may have just popped off as it is getting old/slack.
  32. #32
Either way you need to determine if its do with something internal in the box, which probably wont be fun if you need to change it there and then or ££ getting it recovered. No one wants to be changing boxes in winter, I can vouch for that when I did one last winter in -10 below. However you might be lucky, with what you've described it sounds like something gear control based to me.
  33. #33
Yeah i was pretty sure its linkages rather than the box, espically coz it was getting stiff to put in first, and even second i spose.

Only noticed when going into third coz it felt so smooth, so guess its been like that a while.

Found a vts box for £50 off a trusted seller so not the end of the world, tempted to do it anyway lol
  34. #34
what was the outcome? and yes a VTS box is a good choice on a VTR, not massively long but also not silly short like some boxes
  35. #35
Didnt get it sorted, went pub after work so didnt have time to jack it up
Back in london now so wont see the car for minimum of 5 days

Plus side, someones posted in the regionals saying theyll come have a look for me
