my very own disco lights :/

I changed the plug on my alternator the other day due to it being broken, all is well except since i changed it, ALL lights (headlights, tail lights, lights off stereo, heater control lights, speedo lights and interior light) are flickering :/
At 1st i thought it had something to do with the bass in the car so turned headunit completely off but everything still flickers.

Any idea why ? as i'm stumped.

I wanna say it sounds like a wire is shorting on a piece of metal somewhere, but I get the feeling that isn't right..

the only wire i touched was for the alternator plug.
could i of wired it wrong?

on the original wiring 1 wire is red, other is green (i think) but on new plug with a bit of wire, there was 1 red and 1 black.
I've wired red to red and green to black.

Try it the other way round and see if it fixes it?

I would , but i don't want to do any damage to alternator if it goes tits up lol

    Is it still earthed?
  7. #7
yes, as said in previous post, i only replaced the plug (2 wires)
will check it all over again in daylight just to be sure

Think you should get some sleep , then when you're more awake read it again

Checked all earth points, plug on alternator, cleaned terminals up on battery and they're still doing it, does anyone have any more idea's?
  11. #11
Remove the earth from the battery, then try rewiring the plug IE swapping the wires round mate.

if i swap wires round and re-connect everything back up, will i do any damage to alternator or anything?

That tbh i`m not sure on mate, how many wires is it on the alternator?I ask because from memory its 3 1 does the power, another is earth & the final 1 is for the charge light on the dash. What you could try is to put a test lamp on each wire then you`ll know which wire does what.Sorry couldn`t be of more help mate.

sod it, will try it tomorrow
theres 1 wire with a ring terminal on and then theres the 2 wired plug (mk2)
will find out tomorrow if it works, if not im leaving it lol

The ring terminal I suspect will be the earth mate.

    It is indeed.
Have also noticed, lights only flicker as soon as i turn headlights on :/

checked all earths etc, still does it. might just leave it, doing my head in trying to find the fault lol

Have you checked your output voltage from the alternator. As if there is a problem with the voltage regulator then you would be able to see it in the voltmeter reading's. If in doubt check out the below You Tube vid.

worth a check i suppose although can't see it being a droppage in alternator as it never did it before i changed the plug on it :/

As you have previously said all you have changed it the plug. So if in doubt unplug all the wiring off the alternator. Other thing is remember why it is call an alternator and not a dynamo. The alternator changes DC to AC then back to DC again. As if could be a fault of the rectifier on one of the three phases of the internal alternator circuitry. Either that or I've had to much Frosty Jack and disengaged my mouth from me brain.
