Hi all
I'm new to Saxperience and registered for advice. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
My niece has recently acquired a 2001 Saxo 1.1 5 speed manual, with 104K on the clock. She bought it from a so-called friend (a mechanic) who said he would sort out a suspected noisy clutch release bearing, but never did.
Step in yours truly to sort it out. I found a lot of problems with the vehicle that I've corrected. I have fitted a new clutch and release bearing and while I had the gearbox out I checked it by rotating the input shaft; I was concerned because the gearbox sounded rough. There didn't seem to be any excessive float in the input shaft however and I hoped the noise was simply down to the fact that there was no oil in the gearbox.
After putting everything back together there is a noise that appears to be coming from the gearbox (the same noise that was there before I changed the clutch). It's a rumbling noise that goes away when the clutch is depressed and re-appears when the clutch is released. I'm suspecting the gearbox because the old clutch and release bearing did not appear to be in too bad a shape (no significant wear on the plate and the release bearing wasn't noisy).
Although I haven't been able to drive the car yet on the road (waiting for ant-roll bar clamps to finish the job) I'm pretty sure the noise is going to get worse as speed increases (when I am able to road test the vehicle) as it did before I changed the clutch. The engines seems OK for 104K miles.
The clutch cable was recently changed (not by me) after it snapped. When I refitted the gearbox and adjusted the clutch, I struggled to get it within the parameters as defined in the Haynes manual. Although the clutch seems to be functioning OK any advice will be appreciated.
Any advice as to further trouble-shooting this, before I buy a used box, will be much appreciated. I don't want my niece running around in this thing if there is a chance the gearbox is going to seize. She's only 18 and an inexperienced driver.
