alternator ~ power steering?

  1. #1
I've put a 1.1 alternator onto my vtr, since my one was knackered, my power steering didn't work before, and it still doesn't work, i've tried everything, relay/fuse/hammer/bleed it,

Now would having the 1.1 alternator cause power steering not to work, as it has 10? less amps? my rad fan doesn't work either, ( i have no sound system and everything else works fine)

the PAS motor is probably jammed because it's been sitting idle for so long.

Need to remove the pump and pull it apart to free it off, then reassemble it.

Check you're getting power at the motor with a multimeter first though

It has been sat off the car for 4 months now

I havn't got a multimeter, but bench testing it on the battery will cross out if the motors working it not before i took it off the car it did work fine

Mine worked great when I removed mine too, but now it refuses to work because it's partially seized

Yeah use the battery on it make sure you empty most of the fluid to check it or you'll make a huge mess lol

will do im used to making a mess so i can rule out the fact i've got a 1.1 alt on a vtr yes?

I had a problem with my Rotrex charger recently where it was shredding belts left, right and centre (the belt in question also goes around the alternator). The big give away that the belt had gone (apart from the sound like you had gone in to the kitty litter) was that the power steering went. So in short if the alternator isn't working properly (or in my case not at all) the pump doesn't work.

the PAS is direct drive from the alternator which would explain that.

I Know. All you need is a cheep one. You ask any Mechanic what is the first tool in his tool box that he goes for after his hammer and he will tell you a Multimeter.

no its not, 99% are electric hydraulic, so not direct off the aux belt.

That's not what I meant, The electrical feed for the motor is direct from the alternator.

nearly all LHD s1 models with PAS are belt driven stop making up statistics

show me an UK LHD s1 ...

its not direct, it goes through a relay from the fusebox.

its probably seized, very common, strip the pump apart, clan the crap out, rebuild it.

Electrically, when it's switched on, it's direct. and I already suggested pulling the pump apart because it's seized

You never said 99% of UK 106's
