Locking wheel nut key missing (again)

  1. #1
    Hi all, my first post.
Wifey just got a nice 1.6 vtr and i was about to change the front discs and rear pads.
Great the locking key is missing. FFS. So I read around here and found the smashing a socket onto it method. First whacked one on to the outer portion. Sheared it off. Joy...
So found a 12 point 18mm socket. Tried to mash it on with my lump hammer and.... not happening. Not got a 19mm and |TBH it freaks me out hitting it so hard. Cant be good for it surely.
Anyway, so now i have the keyed part of the nut left which seems a tiny bit worn anyway. Cant afford to get a garage to do it and it HAS to be done.
Should I just drill it out and have done with it?
Please help, I'm sick of being thwarted by just a poxy stupid thing like this.
    Thanks in advance.

Oh and Ill need to remove the locking nuts off all four wheels and yes I've looked EVERYWHERE in the car for the key.lol
Box in boot with four steely (i guess for spare) bolts and an empty bit for the key.

at work i use an airchisel on french locking wheelbolts, i love doing them. i usually get rid of the lump bit you have already sheared off, then cut a little groove in the side of the bolt where the little lugs sit in (or use the lugs to chisel against) if you get the angle of the chisel right, they come undone pretty easily.
depends on how tight they were done previously.
with my trusty airchisel, can usually do a set in 15-20 mins

try it with a hammer and chisel, you dont need to hit the chisel with extreme force, just enough to do it in a controlled way

TBH that sounds even scarier lol. So If I whack a chisel in as if im trying to undo it with the chisel? Sorry just seems counter intuitive, just like many car probs though lol. Thanks

tap the bolt anticlockwise round with the chisel.
not square on lol. be careful not to muller your wheels with it though.

Thanks, any other methods greatly appreciated. This car is so never having lockers again.

20mm hex socket and a hammer just hit it on and thay will come off and its easyer to hit the socket off the bolt than the 19mm muti fit socket...

Right its looking like ill need to drill them out, what drill bit should i use?
Got prices ranging from £15 per wheel+ up to £240!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are there any saxo fans in or near basingstoke that know how to do this?

take it to a garage and get another standard bolt welded on then take it off

I'm not sure how you are struggling with this?!?! I just removed 4 locking wheel bolts from my VTS using the socket method in about 15 mins.

Which type locking wheel nuts do you have? Earlier style with 4 little lugs or the later style that looks like a normal bolt but is slightly smaller and has little splines to match the key.

Don't use hex sockets, they are not really round enough to go over the later style lockers. You wan't sockets with a lot more sides (double-hexagonal which is 12) as they are much easier to get on. I used 18mm for mine.
