Kncoking/rubbing noise inside engine, now won't start!

    Hi,

I have a Citroen Saxo 1.1i Forte, and a few days ago my engine light came on, yet the car ran as usual. I took it to the garage and was told that it was an undocumented error, code P0172. The mechanic said it was fine to drive, and to bring it back in the new year if the light came back on.

A couple of days later, the engine light came back on, and a little later the engine cut out when I was driving. I got the engine started again, but there was a rubbing/knocking noise from the inside of the engine. I managed to drive it back to the garage as it was close by (the engine cut out a couple more times getting it there), and as I got there it cut out and wouldnt start again.

When I try to start it, it makes a noise similar to when the battery is almost dead, but it is a constant tone (instead of a duh-duh-duh-duh, its just a constant duhhhhhhh - if you get what I mean, hard to explain!).

Any ideas what this could be? I only need the car for 2 more months before I go travelling, dont wanna pay fortunes to get it fixed!

    Thanks

po172 is a code for system running too rich,so i`d say the fault lies either with the CATor more than likely the lambda sensor mate.

I had been told a while back that there could be something wrong with the lambda sensor, as it occasionally revs up on its own a little.

Could this be causing the noise coming from the engine though?

Never mind, just heard back from the garage. Apparently its game over for my little Saxo, something to do with the timing belt shredding teeth, which in turn has bent the pistons?

Costs too much to fix, off to the scrap heap it goes

Bugger. Sorry to hear that mate. However - you can get a whole 1/1 engine to drop in for around £100 at most. People can't give away 1.1's. Easy to change - can be done in a few hours, especially by a garage. If you still need the car, that's an option?
