    the chatter sounds like its the release bearing.
    not sure about the reluctancy to start with the clutch being down though.

    Could be your release bearing/clutch is so fkd that its causing enough resistance to put stress on the starter motor and over time that could get weak/strip the ring gear.

    Either way its a clutch issue, there is no electronics that will prevent the car starting if the clutch is down.

    Could be a catostrophic gearbox failure but you would notice a few more symptoms in that department if it was.

    Realistically if there is something causing many crank position sensors to go, its something hitting the sensor itself whether it be parts of the ring gear, gravel from having no bellhousing cover on it, or bits of the clutch. not a lot else can cause a CPS to repeatedly fail in a short period of time.
