Important! : Stiff Gears and Linkages coming into contact with exhaust flange!

  1. #1
As the title says, just bought a VTS with a 106 GTI engine in it. When I got it, the engine was only secured by two mounts, with the lower gearbox mount free. I've fixed the mount on now, and checked to see how the gears felt. They're really stiff and when I've gotten underneath I can see that the linkages are coming in to contact with the bottom of the exhaust manifold flange. I've had a look on the forums to see if I could find any answers but no luck, I'm pretty certain that the mount is on the correct way, cant see any other way that it goes on. Took a few photos so you can see!

I've noticed that the linkage connected to this rod (arrowed) is quite stiff, whats caused it? Cheers

i had the same problem so i took an angle grinder to the linkage that was hitting the exhaust flange and only took off what i needed. works sweet now.

as for being stiff just lube up where all the linkage joints are and see if it loosens up

I agree that it must be a mounting issue because one of the driveshafts are touching the chassis! But I dont see how the lower gearbox mount can be put on another way??

Definitely sounds like its on the wrong way, sooo many people put it on wrong its unreal.

Should look like this (not the best pic sorry!)
