Important! : Banging noise from the rear, brakes pulsating

All right guys, basically my car tried to kill me on the way to work this morning! I had to get it towed home.

As I reversed out of my garage it felt like there was some resistance even though the handbrake was off. Was pulling up to a junction about a mile later, the brake pedal started pulsating up and down with no brakes then full lock a second later.

Tried to find somewhere to pull over and the car starts making this really loud banging noise with the back of the car moving up and down at the same time as the noise.

Managed to limp it to a car park and get it towed home, any ideas what's happened to it?

I've recently changed both driveshafts, gear linkages and shocks.

    Cheers!

I would have a look at your top mount bearings bottom ball joints and track rod arms and ends.
Certainly doesn't sound healthy.... have a look at all 4 hubs aswell.

Did it feel like the braking resistance was coming from the rear? If so, with the symptoms you describe, I would suspect that it's dropped a brake shoe (assuming you have drum brakes at the rear). It sounds like the friction material has got stuck to the inside of the drum and is going round and smacking stuff, causing the on/off braking and causing the back of the car to jump up and down. Get it up on axle stands (with it in gear and chocked) and try to rotate each rear wheel by hand with the handbrake off. If they don't rotate freely all the way round then something is wrong. Can also try the same trick with the handbrake on. If one moves that'll be the one that's dropped the shoe.

Cheers for the help both, turned out it dropped both brake shoes at once in one drum!

Whoops! That's a pretty bad failure chap. Had the brake lining delaminated from the shoes, or had the whole shoes come off their mountings? Have you checked the other side, as they might be staring to go as well? Also, you should replace brakes in axle pairs anyway.

It was just the brake linings, they fell out as soon as I took the drum off lol. I haven't looked at the other side yet but I'm going to be replacing both sets of shoes anyway.
