Petrol gearbox on diesel

  1. #1
Hi guys just a quick one. My mates got a ax as a run about with the 1.5 diesel engine in and he cant find a gearbox for it. I was wondering if the petrol boxes would fit. He doesnt care about different ratios or even the speedo not work it never goes above 40 anyway. Any help appreciated

Edit: whoops, thought you meant saxos not an AX. I think the bellhousings changed to be akin to the saxo ones on later ax models, so an early one will work, but the petrols are 4 speed arent they??

4 or 5 speed, if it's an MA gearbox it'll bolt onto the TUD5 engine.

I'd go with a 5 speed just to be on the safe side though

The only difference between 4 and 5 speed is the little extra bit on the end for 5th gear.
iirc the housings are all the same.

Petrol boxes are much shorter, so it might be noisy doing 60-70mph.

If I'm wrong, somebody should post up pictures of the different bell housing patterns to show me

If you cant find a diesel box fit a VTR box, not all that much difference to be honest

^ Yup, saxo box should fit an ax fine. VTR box might even be a bit longer than the diesel one. The saxo 1.4sx box has almost exactly the same ratios as the saxo diesel box if I remeber rightly.

only first and second gear are different iirc

3,4 and 5 are the same VTR/Diesel and 1.4 quikky box is the same as a diesel box.

I've got a list of all the ratios here.

^ ah ha, I wasn't far out then! My 1.4sx saxo used to have the same box as a quiky then. Wish I'd known that the diesel box was the same before I had to drop a 1.1 box in it (I had a spare diesel box at the time and the 1.1 box is stupid short in comparision).

I didn't know they were the same either until March last year lol

I'm keeping my 1.5D gearbox though just in case I need it
