I've had a whining noise on my car since I bought it, which I've asked about a few times and ended up putting down to just being the VTS, or a noisy PAS pump.
Anyway, I recently overhauled my engine and removed the PAS, and the whiny noise was still there, which puzzled me, however now it sounds like a dwarf gargling hammers. Putting a bar on the alternator, and my ear on the other end, it sounds even worse inside, so I'm assuming it's eaten it's bearings, which I'm a bit suprised at, as it was new (visibly so) when I bought the car in April last year.
What are the options here, can you strip alternators and regrease or change the bearings? It works fine, and if I can repair it it'll save me the chew on of finding another.
If it is goosed, are there any other alternators which are lower power output I could use on the VTS, say a 1.0 or something, or are the pulleys / mounts different? The thought behind this being the lower the power output, the less energy it takes to spin it, and my car doesn't have PAS anymore, the radio isn't used, so really it powers the engine and lights, that's about it.
Minimal gains baby.
