Fitting 'R' Alloys

  1. #1
came to fit my vtr alloys onto my 1.1 desire today, encountered two problems! first wheel i put on was the offside rear wheel, seemed to fit fine, was right up on the hub, used the vtr wheel bolts and a locking bolt, was held on good! when moving the car slowly it felt like it was knocking on something, so i took the wheel off and saw this:

whats gone on here? i thought the 'R' wheels were a straight fit?

anyway, onto the offside front wheel! put the wheel onto the hub, used the vtr bolts, started to tighten them up (not as tight as they'll go) when they all stopped turning, nowhere near to the point where i could lower the jack, the wheel could also be wobbled around and taken off the hub and have it sitting on the bolts? eugh. any help would be massively appreciated!

I would check your axle for play and camber.

car passed mot last month, surely something would have been said about the axle?

Clean those archs aswell before rust sets in.

find it hard to believe the axle is shot? passed mot around a month ago, no advisories on it, and has done 200 miles since

Just jack the back up and check for play

    whats the difference in fitting?

There is also the fact some 1.1 and 1.4 drum axles are narrower, meaning you would have to space the rears by 5mm or so

that would probably explain the rubbing on the rear then! can anyone shed any light on the front wheel problem?

Wrong wheel bolts.. You need flat seated...

    Flat

    Yours are tapered..

Look inside the wheel, you will see that the hole sits flat, and is not a V shape inside for a bolt to sit in..

does this explain why the bolts were stopping when they were no where near holding the wheel on??

Yep, because they weren't seating properly.. Wrong bolts, probably too long.. So they will have been bottoming out in the hub, before they got hold on the wheel..

If the bolts are from steels, then they will be too long..

To solve both problems, get the proper bolts, go to a scrappy and you will be able to buy some, or failing that, ebay..

For the back, you will need 5mm spacers.. That will bring the wheels on the back away from the body work

    will these bolts be okay??

Yep, they should do the job

if you were using those long bolts on the rear im very surpriced that they never went to far into the drum and hitt the brakes inside and cought sumfin and locked the wheel up when moving it.
