Rust under car near front wheel.. mot next month!

  1. #1
So ive got my MOT next month on my 1.1 T reg Saxo... and the exhaust started rattling..

jacked it up and have isolated it to the CAT.. which i can replace myself no problem..

i noticed there is quite a lot of rust just behind the front wheel arch on the car floor where the underseal has given way and corrosion has set in as you can see in the pics below..

the whole rusted area would probably give way if i hit it with a hammer as its not very stable!

it doesnt look to go hugely near the suspension mount though

does anyone know if this is this going to be repairable relatively cheaply?
or am i better off looking at scrapping the car and buying another one

unfortunatley i cant weld.. and don't really know anyone who can.. i really must learn!

has done 112,000 miles... and went through its MOT with no problems at all last year..

other things to note.. as well as the cat needing to be changed the 2 rear tyres may need swapping as they're close to the limit.. and itll need its oil changing before the MOT..

    Thanks in advance!

Looks nasty but nothing that cannot be fixed relatively easy with the right skills. I'd say in the region of £100 maximum for it welding, two new tyres and 12 months happy motoring haha.

Yeah right £100 that's fucked would need a hell of a lot of cutting and welding.

"The underseal has given way"... You mean the jelly mix and warm water someone brushed on in the 90's?

Looking at a few hundred to have all that cut out, and replaced...

Most MOT stations would probably fail it, even if its not near a strut or anything

Oh, and they don't check your oil for an MOT

had a couple fail on welding like this. general time is a couple hours to do it. time you cut it out, prep it and weld it. most garages charge £40 - £50 an hour

Doesnt look good needs the underseal taking back to see just how big the area actually is before estimating costs really.

That what happens when people jack the car up from that point and not the seal.

For the record corrosion 30cm near a load bearing point is a fail.

    cheers for the replies everyone

the oil was because its due its service soon...

and I can only speak for myself but ive only ever jacked it up at the correct jacking points with a trolley jack..

anyway..! its looking like its going to be new car time.. factoring in all the other costs its probably going to be at the very least £400 to get it back on the road after february.. and thats quite a bit towards a newer car..

does anyone have any recommendations of places to scrap cars that will come and take them away for you? am based in Leeds / Doncaster

My 1.1 rusted right through here. Prone point on these cars unfortunately. I was thankfull that i have relatives that weld

Not hard to learn basic welding guys it's a really useful skill. Just get yourselves a cheaply mig or stick welder and get practicing

now on a 32" monitor (ok a tv lol) i can see much clearer where/how much damage there is when you said front wheel arch i thought we were looking somewhere else lol.

woaahh! hold on a minute, its a Treg saxo, no need to get it welded up by a bloody coded, loyds, be9, professional £50p/h welder.
Do you not have a mate who can weld? If not,
You have a month, just shop about the back street garages.
If your in Docaster, give mick harpers garage a shout in Finningley, hes an old boy with a unit using an old bus as an office. Hes been there since the 80s and did two jacking points for £110 on a saxo a few months back that were way more gone than that and they passed an MOT.

actually, after a seconds glance it is pretty bad, that may have gone up the chassis rail too!
Get a screw driver and dig out as much as you can, then you will know how big the hole is.

also, if it's gone there you better have a good look over the rest of the car. I dare say rust will have attacked other places. Namely top of front wheel arches (under fuse box and ecu) and in the rear arches/boot. Or at least that's where mine was!

It's an mot failure because its within 30 cm of a suspension mount (the arb brackets and possibly rear wishbone mount) a garage will
Just clean it off and plate over the top But your carpet needs to be taken up.
