Gearbox Oil

When lowering my vtr my mate managed to pull out the driveshaft(twat) which pissed gearoil all over the floor, now im not sure how much it lost but ive boyght two bottles of 75/90 GL-5 gear oil, is there a measure to know how much needs to be out in or should i just drain it and refill 2 litres? as its starting to whine in 4th

If its whining chances are mechanical damage has occured, even if its minor. You might be able to use gearbox additive to cure the whine, but frankly I found them to be pants and synchros rely on friction to work - not good if you are introducing a super slippy additive to the oil. Its two litres of oil but dont use 75w90, it kills synchros.

I have been using 75w 90 for years on my car without a problem. I would drain it all and re fill, there no level on these box just fill til it start coming out the full hole, but they are meant to hold 2litre.

The correct oil for Ma box is 75w80. But many are supplying 75w90 now.

I use 75w90 as it a track car and the oil is getting a lot hotter on the track.

Might not be right. But I have not had a problem with synchros with a good 75w90, I use a miller 75w90 gear oil, crx 75w90 nt, there also ls gear oil which is no good for synchros boxes.

you can still get 75w80 in most places though but as you say the 75w90 is better in the high temperature range. I'm only going a thread that Sandy Brown posted on about gearbox oil as he said it lunch the synchros.
Plus Total 75w80 is cheaper than most other brands for 2l if you get it from citroen, which is what I run in the clio and what I intend to in the saxo (when I can actually get to one as my town doesnt have a citroen dealer and pug is always closed when I get free time!)

remove the plastic breather cap on top of box --fill through that with level plug removed-
    far easier and less messy

The whine only seems to be in 4th, does this mean fucked gearbox?

    Cheeky bugger

The whine is certainly noticable when just touching the throttle keeping the exhaust/engine noise down (Saxsport with Pipercross not exactly quiet) but as soon as you boot it you cant hear it any longer, not sure if its still whining or it stops under load.

my other problem is the gearstick shaking! the faster you go the faster it shakes and the entire car shakes, ive been told lower box mount, so my pal had one laying around and i changed that and it still does it but not quite as bad, could it possibly be driveshaft because of how it wobbles slowly at slow speeds and speeds up as the wheels spin more? if you depress the clutch however or put the car in neutral, the wobble/shake instantly stops, any ideas?

dif bearings are favorite --the old age is the car not you
you could try using a different oil lke redline heavy shock --that will queiten any g/box as well as protecting gears better
    about £20 a litre

A lot of people in the drag world swear by the redline stuff, supposed to really help prevent box damage.

That said i use Motul Motylgear 75/80 and it's always served me well. £11 p/l from Opie
