Can the roll pin be done with gearbox in ?

  1. #1
I'm having a mate off here look at the car. The gearstick is so sloppy and i keep getting fobbed off by garages telling me its " normal ". I dunno, you think they would want the work.... Anyway, I think my roll pin needs doing, Linkages and the other usual wear and tear bits. Its a VTR mk2, Late 2001.

Any ideas what is specifically wrong with mine and can the bits be done with the box inside ? I havent really got " gear box out job " money to spend.

Its so sloppy in and out of gear, I'm almost certain its not the box, but sometimes if i'm rolling forward slowly and want to slide into 1st, its like there is something in the way and i cant change unless i really force it. Its also terrible clunky and notchy when i change. No whining or nothing, then when it warms up it seems to get better.

I need it sorted cause i'd never sell the car like it is. A buyer would immediately think the box is fubarred.

That is normal, BOTH of my 106's are like that with new linkages and no play in the roll pin. usually worse when it's cold too.

But yes, you can change/fix all that stuff with the gearbox on the car if you want to

you're not supposed to select first from rolling anyway, first gear is for starting from dead halt

See the gearbox play elimination thread.
My vote is though and in this order:

washer mod to the selector - this made the most difference
New arm on selector if worn into an oval hole
New roll pin (or a good used one but for 32p its of no consequence)

New linkages and a quickshift are also good to have with the above.
Dont bother using a bolt instead of a roll pin, as I found unless the bolt is a perfectly tight fit any slop/play between the hole and the bolt is exaggerated immensely at the gear stick end.

I know mate lol, but i was just trying to emphasize my point. Its like there's something blocking my gear changes. 1st is where i notice it more, but yes it does happen more from cold. I want it sorted though as the more i drive, the more i feel i may be doing more damage to the box as it clunks into gear. Its not right.

Cheers mate. Ill have my mate read this and see if he can make head or tail of it.

I remember someone showing me once, an arm thing that went into a hole ( in the side of the box i think ) and it was wobbly as fk. But of course, its just got worse over the years and i have had enough now, needs doing.

I dont understand why garages fob you off though and tell you its normal, because when i first bought the car gear changes were tight. Now its so sloppy it makes the car unpleasant to drive sometimes.

Yeah I usually have to have a few goes at third gear in the GTI

That's down to a worn bellcrank though! might be worth checking that as well.

I think there is an easy solution.... a match and some gasoline lol.

Ive actually tried to change gear before........." woops, no... lets try one of the other 4 " Its like that..... Its my box i want to choose lol.

If you grab the selector on the back of the box, check for movement in and out.
    looks like this

That gives you most of the slop I find.
Tap the pin out via the passenger side arch using a couple of extension bars and a hex bit and you can remove the arm

search 'guide to completely remove gearstick play'

the roll pin can be done with the gearbox in, its very easy actually. Just use a selection of extention bars and knock it out from the passenger side wheel arch

the guide also says to use a drilled out washer which helps the in/out movement as said ^

then you knock in the new roll pin through the drivers side wheel arch. new roll pin costs like 30p from citroen

i found the gear selector ball (big nylon ball) was really worn and seemed to have alot of play when i was under the car. Paid £46 for a new one at citroen, didnt make fuck all bit of difference compared to the 30p roll pin lol

If you follow gandi699 info it's piss easy as did the same there to mine when changing the gear box should take no longer than a hour max

you dont need to knock it in from the other side either, so one less wheel to remove.
And as above, that nylon ball selector part is the best part of £50 and to me I dont think its needed that badly provided its not totally shot. I didnt replace mine and its been on the car for 105,000 miles - shift feels lovely and slick, probably better than my JC5 in the 182 all for the sake of making up a spacer washer from an old driveshaft nut. I didnt even use a new roll pin as mine was fine!

my old one looked like an old mans bollock

was worn quite a bit it was quite a bit smaller than the new one

the on mine isn't that bad to be fair, bit of grease on it works a treat
