Engine noise help?

  1. #1
So we have just started our VTS up for the first time since doing the headgasket and renewing the Cambelt and auxbelt.

It's sounds a bit like a diesel, all the timing pins went in correct.

I've never put a video on here but here goes:-

If that doesn't work then follow this link:-

What could it be, we're thinking tappets? Or is it normal untill its run in again.

    Thanks
    Jay

    ?

I took the head in complete to a engine centre and they mentioned doing the tappets.

If the tappets have been drained or they are new units they will be dry, that noise is common if thats the case and stops when the tappets are full.

Could be a damaged one though if thats not the case.

    Ahh right ok,

When I took the head into the engine centre he said he had to redo our hydraulic lifters/tappets so I'm guessing this could be the problem.

Is it something to be worried about? Or should we run the engine for a while around 2k rpm to get the oil circulating?

New oil & filter have been put on.

id find out exactly what was done before you do that. its likely that the noise is the fact tappets are dry but i want to be 100% sure if it was mine.

If they are dry how long does it usually take for them to get some lubraction and sort them selves out.

Will give them a ring, what are the main things I should ask about?

From having a quick search should I run the engine around 3000-5000rpm for 10mins to get all the oil flowing and see if it improves, maybe take the rockers off and pour fresh oil over them first?

Pouring oil over the rockers will do jack shit. General practice is to keep them submerged in oil when removed.

I'd find out exactly what they have done to the tappets before doing anything but I assume they've removed the cam carrier to release the cams so they could do a head skim, and didn't want to leave the tappets in incase they fell out during the machining process.

    Cheers Jordy,

Will give them a ring tomorrow see what process they use see what they recommend.

What are the usual ways of fixing this or getting them properly lubricated again?

Well your options are either to run the engine to they fill, but that risks damaging them. or its a case of removing them and manually filling them. (thats if they've been drained)

It depends really How empty they were when they went in, a day or so just left should be ok but if they've been drained completely. depends if your a gambling man or not lol

    Thanks.

Just gave the guys a ring. He said they drained them fully as this is what you shoud do to stop them jamming. He said at first it will sound like a bag of spanners just run it at high revs to get all the circulating and it will be fine.

I asked if this is risky and he said no thats how he would do it. So i will give that a try and trust there judgement and exeprience.

Just gave the engine a run for a while giving it high revs and it's all sorted.

    Thanks for the help.
