Engine mounts... How many and what do i need?

  1. #1
Theres a knocking sound coming from under the car which sounds like the exhaust hitting the heat deflectors. Gave the engine a rock and the lower engine mount is very soft. Hopefully a new lower mount will sort this but should i change more than just the lower mount?? And which mount/s should i get?
I want to keep the car as close to standard as possible.
Its an 02 VTR with 88k

replace them all with new standard mounts. Theres two, one gearbox side and one the cambelt side, both easy to swap

Hi Gandi. What about the lower mount. There appears to be two, is one a bush?? Looked on ECP and the have an upper engine mount but the picture doesn't look like its the whole thing. Can you point me in the direction of a retailer for the oem parts.
    Cheers

eurocarparts will do them, in the midlands we've another place that are cheap for parts like this and better than ECP in my view, I assume your county will have the same sort of thing. You can buy a whole new lower mount like this:

But you can knock the inside of your current mount out and fit a polyurethane bush into into, which I think is a better solution and helps with the shift and engine movement. vibration will be up a bit from standard

Just by going on the colour is that a powerflex mount? I'll go by recommendation sonif you think the poly ones are best i'll fit those.

Depends what you want from the car really and how you want it to drive, theres powerflex/poly type ones, group N ones, group A which are solid but its recommended running the really hard ones with the more expensive gearbox and engine mounts. For me at least the powerflex or similar poly ones are a good idea for the money and dead easy to change, plus it cant fail in the same way as a standard one. But you will get a bit more vibration when the engine is idling

I can live with the vibration, can't stand the wobbling and clinking thats happening at the moment. Think the poly ones sound right for me.

think they are about £25, 10 minute job to get the old bush out and fit the one now. Nice rewarding job once its fitted too for the improvement it gives

Ended up getting the standard one off ebay £7.50 for lower mount inc postage. Seems pretty well manufactured too. Makes a huge difference. Other two mounts arriving next week.

    ahh youve bought some.

if id of seen this sooner, ive got the other 2 engine mounts in the garage, brand new never fitted, genuine replacements.

    never mind lol.

Have fitted all the mounts now and there is a considerable difference in the feel of the car, feels more direct and compact. Hard to explain but am propper chuffed with the end result. Especially when it cost under £50 to sort it. Still getting a clinking and knocking in the exhaust section but have just bought a new cat and bolts which is where half the noise is comin from and may need to remove part of the rear heat shield.

folks, new to do it yourself motoring, i need to change my gear box mounts, theres a knocking comeing from under there and the bar judders like hell on the motor but goes when i press the clutch in. thoughts or advice?
  13. #13
Bar?? Sounds like a combo. Juddering when the clutch is engaged (i guess when your in neutral) sounds like your clutch might be on its way out. But if your mounts are shot like mine were then it wont be helping things. Process of elimination... Do your mounts first, really easy job if you have the right tools with you. (Socket set inc spark plug socket, 6mm star key, jack under the gear box or sump, 2 x 17mm spanners) pretty sure thats all you need. Give me a shout if you get stuck, as have literally just done them. Bought my mounts from eGay.

The engine mount under my ECU has the rubber perrished and I can move the engine a bit by hand, is this easy to change.

Im pressuming its just the rubber "figure of 8" looking thing not the metal mount?
  15. #15
the rubber buffer is needed but the round mount may also have gone a bit soggy, might be worth doing that too. Have a look at the gearbox low mount too, that can cause a lot of movement
  16. #16
Mine 'figure of 8' bush was knackered too. Just remember that if it looks like it has been squashed and broken then the engine is moving too much. Replace both as you have to take both out anyway. Gear box mount is a doddle and lower engine mount is simples too.

Sorry. Just noticed that you mentioned the metal mount. That will be fine but there are three parts in total. Metal mount, rubber cone engine mount, and rubber buffer.

Lower engine mount lasted no time at all. Going to get a powerflex one now. Easy to fit?

I'm sure you could fit solid silicone to the new mounts to reduce as much wear
