Oil light..

  1. #1
On the way to work yesterday my oil light came on, so I took a detour back to my house to put the last of my oil in. Was the 10w40 I think from my VTR, was only a litre or so just to put my mind at rest whilst driving to work, and the light was a bit intermittent on the journey there, but completely stayed off on the way home but I still went and bought 2 Litres of the correct oil 5w40? The light stayed off all last night.

But on the way to work this morning it came on again?! Surely this cant be due to lack of oil. opinions?

Its not leaking out as fast as your putting it in ? maybe be a dodgey connection ?

Looked on the floor this morning and no sign of any oil loss :s
  4. #4
And did you check the dipstick? The 172 should tell you if the oil level is ok at ignition on
  5. #5
Yeah it says 'Oil ok' and light is off upon ignition and after driving for a couple of mins the light will flash on, then go off after 10 secs then stay on for rest of journey.
  6. #6
Will be checking dipstick on lunch break.
  7. #7
Not sure if im being dumb or blind but where is the dip stick?!

  8. #8
That yellow plug thing by looks of it.
  9. #9
Nope that is the oil cap, where I put the oil. (Presumably that is right ha!)
  10. #10
thats the oil cap. The dipstick is orange and down under that metal fuel rail cover at the front with the X shapes on it

Also the pressure switch for the oil is by the filter, should be green I think

Thanks mate, has given me a bit more direction! Will let you know how I get on when I go out to the freezing car park! By the sea so not nice!
  13. #13
Probably a faulty switch more than likely, you'd know if it had no oil pressure. Going by that picture I'd have a look at your coolant level too, looks a little low
  14. #14
Yeah I saw that, is just above minimum so will top it up on way home tonight
  15. #15
    doubledd
  16. #16
What happens if I have 'overfilled' it? and what is the capacity?
  17. #17
overfilled the oil? you dont want that. Let some out via the sump plug, but you'll need a 8mm square adaptor. Same one that fits saxo gearbox drain plugs

I know ClioSport have scared me now. I have went and checked dipstick, it isnt oozing out but is pretty high! Trying to get hold of my mechanic to see if I can pop in to get him to check it on the way home!
  19. #19
Got a mechanic coming at 12 to release some oil, £25, jeez, frustration!
  20. #20
£25 quid for 2 minutes work? bloody hell
I've just read that thread - you've put 3l of extra oil in on top without checking the level?
  21. #21
did you wipe it first then check the level again?
  22. #22
I know, stupid of me. I assumed because the light was on I would top it up. I bought 2l and just put it in, expecting it to reject it once it was full. Idiot error I know!
  23. #23
how does an engine reject oil? It'll just fill up and up.
  24. #24
I thought it would start coming out of where I was putting it, like with petrol.
  25. #25
It doesnt work like that, theres a set level for it to be at. If its coming out the top of the dipstick or oil cap you are going to have major problems!
  26. #26
Nope it isn't doing either of them! I tried putting my baby finger in the dip stick hole and I didnt get any oil on it, just slight residue.

Also another one to note is the coolant - if its renault type D which is yellow, then dont mix it with any other brand

    Huh? Completely lost me?
  29. #29
if you are topping the coolant up as it looks low - check what it is first basically. Most people use Renault Type D. Dont just bosh anything in there as the yellow renault doesnt like mixing with other blends

How do I check what it is? Just by the yellow colour?
  31. #31
if its a yellowygreen colour chances are its type D. Red or blue or dark green are other blends

Cheers mate, youve been a great help! Will let you know what colour it is in the next hour or so and you can point me in the right direction ;D Cheers again!

I had a look, oil is all sorted now. Mechanic put a screwdriver in the coolant and tasted it! He said it was organic acid, in colour it greeny blue but he said when you buy it it will be the red one which confused me!
  34. #34
OAT coolant is usually red. Blue is the glycol kind. You dont want to mix the two at all, they react and create sludge
  35. #35
So confused.. so which do I need?
  36. #36
I'd play safe and go with blue
  37. #37
Alright cheers.. any like title that has? As in what will it say on the label?
  38. #38
Usually its 2 year life coolant, they'll make some reference to it being blue or have a blue theme on the bottle

    Cheers mater.
