I know this has prob been asked loads and i have tried reading through a few threads but has not really satisfied my curiosity.

I have brought Bilsteins Group n front dampers, Now looking at buying some decent springs for them, Now reading through thread i keep seeing phases like free length, ect? Can any one briefly explain what spring is best for the car for solely track use and what "free length" i need, ect?

    Thanks dan

Free length is the free standing height of the spring. Not compressed. Are you going to coilovers on the front? Or standard legs still?

I've just taken receipt of my faulkners - was in the same position as you - unsure what free length meant and what to ask when I ordered.

Went for 250lb and 230mm free length in the end. Cable tied them to the spring pan to prevent unseating but they haven't settled yet anyway (if they ever will). Ride height on a stripped saxo was unexpected, but my old springs were for show and far too soft and low.

After much research, anymore than 350lb was too much for the Bilsteins (so i read - never tried) and anything less than 240mm free length would unseat (yet to witness it on 230mm... but not to say they wont).

Good service from Faulkner though, irrespective.

And depending on your answer to the coilover question, the above info might be of no use.

Are you using coilover? Use a helper and not such a long main spring.

Helper springs are desgin to go coil bound, and will stop the spring coming unseated.

I now use a 4 inch main spring (100mm) and a 4 inch tender spring to stop it coming unseated.

Me? No.. no coilover. I would have considered the helper spring, but as i've now bought and fitted the main springs... suppose they should get some use.

Just been out in it today after fitting new wishbones, solid rear bushes, powerflex front bushes, new ball joints, powerflex lower gearbox mount and a Group N gearbox mount and it is a million miles ahead of what it was before. Night and day difference.
If the bloody ebay seller would have hurried with the arb bushes, I'd have done them and the drop links - but I don't think I'll bother now - it feels great.
