more starting problems

ok so its had full service mot such n such.
so all plugs have been replaced, oil, coolant and such. i have replaced idle valve, map sensor, checked the engine bay ground points and sanded them back to fresh metal.
its going into garage on monday so they can put a new temp sensor in to see if it helps with this problem....

on cold mornings as in been a frost or particually cold mornings it struggles to start, turn key and either takes a while to fire or doesnt fire and have to jump start it to get it to fire.
now the garage have checked alt which is fine battery is brand new and fully charged.

starts fine every other time except when cold so i;m ruling out petrol pump or whatever primes that part and lost if its anything else to be fair.

Also when it takes a longer time to st start it resets the dash clock. Radio still stays set tho.

Has to be an earth fault then mate for the clocks/dash to reset like that.

But I've cleaned the two side ones garage has looked at gear box one. But it only fails to start in the cold?
  5. #5
Ok I think the resetting is due to gear box earth as found it today.
But still isn't curing the cold starts so whats the problem?

Starter motor on the way out? When you say takes a while to start, does it crank slower, or "normal" speed?
  8. #8
normal speed just doesnt fire, so instead of turn key it fire it takes say up to 4-5 seconds to fire if it actually fires.

    Dear Marcusd.
One thing you may to try, is a new " crankshaft sensor " ?
    I hope this helps,
    Vince.

ok car came back from garage. story goes.....

in mornings cold mornings the car refuses to start without being jumped. then i could drive around fine stop and come back and it would start fine once its warm. but then if left over night or during work would then fail to start again without a jump, as its gone cold???? and also as it was taking a while to fire the clocks would reset.

so started a thread on here steve suggested temp sensor, and others above suggested crank sensor or starter motor.
when i talked to garage bout these they ruled out starter motor, and temp sensor, but then drop tested the battery ( which was new year ish ago) said it was knackered and fitting a new one would cure the none start issue. now i cant confirm this till at least a few days time when car is used for work again but does these faults sound like battery issue? he also said the clocks resetting was due to the battery power things? anyone clued up on all this?

might double check my battery now as ive got the same problem, except it cranks slow on cold mornings.

my battery is just over a year old though!

    Hey all,

I have a similar problem my car wont start without a jump, i take it for a run and it works fine for a day or 2 before it wont start again i dont know whenther its coincidence that these days are icey or not, im hoping this is just a battery or an alternator issue, any ideas?
