Brakes or bearing?

  1. #1
Hello, not sure if a coincidence or not..

Yesterday i got two front tyres fitted and tracking done on my 172. On the way home after i heard a slight grinding noise upon breaking and pulling away. It is a rubbing/grinding noise and gets louder from the point of braking.

Not sure if like the pads are sticking or if it is a wheel bearing. As you are rolling to a stop, you can hear it rubbing slightly, you then break and the closer you get to stopping the louder it gets.

However, from hearing I think it is the rear right wheel area..

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Check for free movement of the pad carrier on the calliper mate. Also check the piston moves in and out freely.

If both those are okay then look into the bearing. If its grinding there will be a little bit of play in it so should be able to feel it in the wheel.

Also if you want to get anal check the disk and hub for run out could be the hub that's bent when you had the wheel fitted.

All a bit of jargon to me.. will try and look into it when it is light.

And it was the front wheels which were changed so rear has not been touched. (well shouldnt have been)

    Thanks though!

check theres no stones lodged between the brake disc and the rear brake metal sheild...had this happen many years ago and sounded similar to what you're describing. It happened on my wifes car about a month ago too which reminded me at the time

Yeah possibly as it happened very suddenly, cheers mate

without taking anything apart.. I can not see anything from just looking around, I have sweet FA tools and can not afford to go to mechanics yet.

if you jack it up a corner at a time and spin the wheel can you identify which wheel it is...then you can listen to what sort of noise it is too

it is 100% rear drivers side, will try and see if it is the bearing tomorrow. To identify as bearing you just spin the wheel and it should wobble a bit yeh?

not always obvious play. it will sound rougher than the others and might "grumble" a bit when you spin it slowly,...you should be able to feel the roughness as the wheel turns

If it is either brakes or bearings.. This would solve it wouldnt it?

That seems a great price and for named product

It'll certainly cure things if its brakes or bearing. If you're swapping the disc though, you'll also need one for the other side as its bad practice to swap on just one

    It is x2 everything
