Have you got an oil leak, you will smell this...especially if the oil is getting on the exhaust downpipe

it as an after market air filter fitted, and the underside of that looks slightly oily. but that as been on since we bought the car in 2011. only resently noticed this smell, like last couple of days..

    firstly.. Has, not as.

Have you checked nothing is leaking from near the rocker cover onto the exhaust? That would make a nice smell come into the car.. If its in the breather, it shouldn't smell really, not inside the car anyway..

Check the oil breather is on tight & hasn`t split.

^As smith says...... Although i did get a vw beetle come into my garage who said they could smell fumes in the car and it was making them feel sick, popped the bonnet and noticed the oil cap was not on properly so the breather gasses were filling the bay and ending up in the heater system (vw ones are wierd as the oil filler has a removable kneck) and that fixed her problem

Actually snake i did check the oil the other day, today i took off and refitted the cap. That could be the cause!
