Turning over but not starting (fuse/immobiliser?)

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

Was adjusting the clutch earlier, so took out the battery and the plate beneath it and adjusted it up as the guide showed on here. Felt it in the car and seemed good so connected everything back up and went to start it to see how it felt with the car running and now it wont start. At one point I did arc the spanner I was doing the positive terminal up with to another part of the car.

Seems to me like its not sparking as everything works but it just doesn't fire. I'm used to bikes so not sure where to go from here. I've checked all the fuses I can find but some of them are a bit borderline. Could it be the immobiliser?

Only just got the car and doing a few touch ups and I've already ran into problems! Please help

I know it might sound stupid but have u got enough fuel in it? Last time mine wouldnt start it was cause.i was low on fuel and my fuel pump packed up conviently after i took out the airbag light. Also check to see if your plugs are sparking. Start with the simple things

The fuel light was on at one point earlier but now it's not. Does sound like it is straved of fuel. Cos it was parked on the flat when it was working, but on a hill when it wasnt. Now its back on the flat it still won't work. If I fill a 5 litre jerry can up and stick that in will that be enough to prime it? How do I check it's sparking in a car? Coil pack off, then stick a plug in and then turn it over With it touching the engine?

Can you hear the fuel pump primming(buzzing sound)?
  5. #5
crank sensor on front left of the gearbox, check you havent knocked the plug or wiring

theyre very sensitive and it will cause your problem..ie no spark

Okay I'll have a look/listen. My dad said that he's not sure of the ins and outs but do some cars reset the immobiliser or something if you fully disconnect the battery?

One other thing on the topic of buzzing. Even when the car is off, the time and miles show up and there is a small buzz coming from somewhere in an electrical box at sort of 11'o clock if you get what I mean. I think its draining the battery as well as last night coming back from paignton it was fully charged and this afternoon it struggled to start.

Okay I'll have a look. Used to bike engines with the gearbox/engine in the same part, is the gearbox directly underneath the clutch arm?

Thanks for this by the way guys, getting to like this forum

also check you havent knocked the big earth wire on top of the box while your on.. as this will stop it starting as well

its more likely to be your crank sensor though
  8. #8
Bollocks, forgot to check the earth. Didnt look for that. Is this the crank sensor your on about?

Checked that, bit of wd-40 but it made no difference. The battery has gone flat though.

Not sure if its down to it not being charged properly, not holding its charge or this electronic problem discharging it.

Couldn't hear anything priming when switching the key. Has the fuel pump packed up? Bit of a coincidence how it was at the time I arced the spanner not when driving or something?

This is the noise I was on about. Happens once every 1 minute/1.30/2 minutes, not sure. But definitely once every 2 minutes. No keys even in it! But it is unlocked. Comes from the box I'm pointing the camera at. Not as loud as it sounds either. Looks like the throttle is connected to it and the fuel injectors are nearby so is that the fuel control unit?

Any ideas guys? Need to move the car really

    Bump..
  11. #11
If you can`t hear anything when turning the key either the ecu is locked preventing the fuel pump from priming,or check the pump relay under the ecu.
  12. #12
Yeah no noise. Do I have to take it to Citroen to get it unlocked? Where is the ecu and what does the relay look like?
  13. #13
when you turn the ignition on so all the dash lights come on is there a orange ligth with a key init staying on?
  14. #14
Charged the battery overnight, went back with it this afternoon and it was still flat? I don't mind buying a new battery but I don't wanna ruin that new one while chasing after these problems.

Tried to jump start it earlier and still won't charge, although we were using a 1 litre corsa  Only a little bit of charge went in.

As above, yeah no noise. Do I have to take it to Citroen to get it unlocked? Where is the ecu and what does the relay look like?

I find it hard to believe something like that has gone though, just like that. Surely these things go over time, not when I happen to be connecting/disconnecting the battery.

One thing I did notice was this emergency cut off switch hanging down, didn't know what it was to begin with but googled the part number. It rattles when its hung upside down, is it supposed to? The mount was snapped and it was just hanging down. So went to the breakers to get another one, for free (ideal!), and fitted that but the battery is so flat its hard to tell if its made a difference. Cant upload a photo as photobucket is down but here's a link off ebay:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-10...item337e17b5cd

Anyone fancy whipping theirs off to see if it rattles? Top right hand corner of the engine bay.

What is that noise though? Is it anything to do with the immobiliser. I'm completely baffled...

Don't know how to edit posts on here, but just noticed its called a fuel cut off switch, so is that the problem?

Saying whats on? Everything comes on as normal, engine cranks over (just about now hahah!) but it doesnt fire.
  17. #17
Sorry, just re read this and no there is no key saying on, does that mean the immobiliser is on? Meaning that the immobiliser isn't interfering, yeah?

And is there any way of editing posts on here? Cos I've just written 4 posts in a row!
  18. #18
Sounds like the ECU has locked itself.
  19. #19
How would I have locked it though? And how do I go about getting it unlocked?
  20. #20
    Please,

    The ecu wont lock itself.
  21. #21
Might be a little too obvious but the big red button at the back of the bay have you pressed it?
  22. #22
Honestly, wasn't obvious. Never heard of a fuel cut off switch before. No such thing on any bike ive worked on. Pushed it earlier as it was unclicked, tried to start but battery had pretty much no juice. Got it on charge now, hoping it was just that.

Anyone know what that clicking noise is in the box beside the throttle butterfly then? (the video I put on youtube)
  23. #23
All sorted now, turns out it was that switch! So much stress to push a little button haha. Cheers for everyone who helped!
  24. #24
    BUMP!

Anyone have any suggestions on how the ecu locks itself? Mine is currently having an issue with this sort of thing. Turns over with the immobiliser/injection warning light staying on. Fuel pump primes fine, immobiliser accepts the code and turns green, I have the original very basic key, no chips inside I don't think! And I be tried bump starting it to no avail. (To try find if it was the crank sensor)

Have you checked your main fuses? Literally by the battery under a plastic cover? You could have blown one of them which is main battery cables etc.
  26. #26
    Just a thought mate
  27. #27
Yep. All fuses are fine, relays seem cool too.
  28. #28
It is a strange one mate :/

  35. #35
    3 hours away mate :/
  36. #36
Just a replacement crankshaft sensor from GSF car parts...no spark but could not smell fuel either so whether this was a case of the crankshaft sensor prevents the fuel pump from working i'll never know. Some oil had trickled down and dropped on the crankshaft sensor meaning it...died?
