Been searching for week to no avail, and basically want to know every single detail on how they are different.
Cheers John

Inlet valves are a bigger size
Cams are different
Springs are different
Followers are different
Cam covers are different
Timing belt cover is diferent
Timing tensioner is different
Engine mount (ECU side) is different
Head stud pattern is different (inlet)
Different head gasket
Different Pistons
Different oil breather system
Different exhaust manifold
Different sump
Basically everything. They just look similar.
The j4/ jp4 hybrid is a real nice budget build motor. Drives nicely feels abit more cammy than j4 with the same breathing mods. As youd expect it too. But the j4 feels more torquey earlier on.
Considering how cheap the jp4 can be had for. I got a brand new on pallet motor from peugeot direct for pennies! And have had 3 now that are under 5k miles for under 200quid.
Going to turbo a hybrid shortly, not sure how itl take the boost but all my spare engines cost less than a set of forged pistons, so i dont care if it melts....

well your the only cool ginger about then
either way if you are thinking of doing a hybrid engine I would probably do something like a J4 bottom end, JP4 head with J4 internals, C2 VTS inlet with tweeqd J4 tb adapter usual breathing mods should see you around 140 ish

I am gav, but it does probably help that people think I look like Ed Sheeran lol.
Not bad from standard hybriding tbh.
Keep it comming if there's any more info in your minds
I was in two minds wether to use the j4 bottom end with jp4 head but was too curious as to how well the jp4 bottom end would cope with some abuse.so kept the jp4 bottom end. Granted itl now rev above its original limit.but nearly 2 and a half years and 10k miles later its still going strong. Although its rapidly munching a stem seal now. And the motors still done less than 15k from factory. Cant be bad.
Its a bit limited i guess with lairy cams as it wont take a very high lift but a good 140bhp is fun enough in a sub 750kg car. Especially with a quaife xsi box on.

well tbh if you did all that fiddled with the cam timing and had it mapped up that would be an awesome little road engine tbh
Actually while were at it, i noticed early on that an oil cooler didnt seem as necesarry on the jp4. I ran it the first summer with one but even then, hard b roading and the odd trackday didnt phase it. Ive since removed the cooler and am unlikely to refit other than for a few summer trackdays.
I dont know wether the oil pump is more refined or what. But just something ive noticed.

that oil cooler thing is more of a heat exchanger really 106 gtis never had them so wouldn't worry to much in all honesty
Mine currently runs stock gti management and i definately reckon with my pred on it and a decent mapping session would see a few nice gains.
Theres loads of subtle bits i much prefer on the jp4 like the dipstick tube. Just tidyer and dont get them gay leaks like the j4.
I also chose to keep the jp4 cambelt tensioners, on my mates advice and they are holding together fine.
Also the jp4 camcovers are sooo much better than the j4s.
Although they did rub my bonnet of the s1 106
Im basically a post behind here..... I dont like the stock heat exchanger... They can and do deteriorate allowing oil and water mix....
I had a 13row mocal

Jp4s is a better choice like id say definatly on pretty much all levels. Definatly all levels performance wise. I have a good graph of a j4 vs a jp4 with the same boddies, same profile cam's etc (As close as to the same spec as possible) Jp4s makes 196hp J4 makes 183hp same rollinh road both sub 10K mileage engines iirc. Id move over to a jp4s if i was to spend any more money on mine power wise.
Yes mate. Ive seen theres piston differences and management and inlet between jp4 and jp4s

Im not sure what the difference between jp4 & jp4s is with the j4 stuff to be honest ive not seen any graphs from the same places. Would be quite intresting if someones got some!
From what ive seen over the last few years, the j4/jp4 hybrid makes much the same power as the jp4s with similar breathing mods.
But the jp4 being plentifull and cheap is always gonna be my favourite as im tight.
I would imagine the jp4s has rods more akin to the j4 and pistons similar to. The jp4 everythink seems a bit more spindly; so presumably weaker...?

Yea ive seen alot of Jp4's with the j4 stuff making 125-130hp.

Jp4 makes peak torque lower in revs compared to a J4, So get a better torque curve / power band.
Basically they looked at the J4 and looked at what could be improved and came up with the JP4 so it's clearly better
