   The person who is the highest bidder can set a 'highest price' that he will pay for the item, and if someone bids on it, then it will automatically outbid you untill you bid a price thats higher than that persons 'highest bid.'

   It means the person that was winning the item before you Bidded had put a higher maximum bid then you entered for example I bid a maximum of 10.00 however no one else has bid on this item do the bid stays at 0.99 (if that was the starting bid) you now come along and bid 5 pounds however my maximum bid of 10 pounds still is there so now I'm still winner the auction by one pound so auction will now be 6.01
