Garage price rough idea.

  1. #1
How much would the following cost, roughly.

Replace - Selector arm and the big rubber bush / roll pin and maybe linkages.

Two back wheels off to wind back / grease sticky piston.

    Oil and filter change.

Just want an idea so I can clock if the mechanic is trying it on.

erm well it depends on the labour rate of the garage and the price of the parts, if your getting the parts yourself its abit cheaper

probs looking at about 4/5 hours labour depending on the garage mechanics so times that by the labour rate and tahats how much you would be paying, if they buy the parts theyll be more expensive

I think i'll grab them myself defo. Its more than likely going to be a mate doing it. I try to steer clear of garages as much as poss because round by me there aren't many trust worthy ones.

Its probably three hours chargable work. Whats he asking for?

Well, I wasn't sure whether Gazer from here was gonna do it, or whether I'd have to take it to a garage, because the whistle on the brakes is doing my nut in.

It seems as though Gazer is gonna look at brakes and gear bits on Saturday, but not the linkages or selector, we're just going to try a roll pin first.
On inspection a couple of weeks back, Gazer pointed out that some dickhead just used a bit of metal wire as a roll pin ( i didn't know).

Basically my stick is proper wobbly and often causes me to miss gears, I want to sell the car within the next few months and want to get it running as good as poss.

Its a cracking little motor, just general wear and tear bits let it down.

I might not have to use the garage now, but In case i had to, I just wanted to go there with an idea.

Do the oil yourself, piece of piss and will save you a bunch.

All those jobs are easy enough to yourself in a couple of hours with a mates help if inexperienced.

    Yeah, that's what we'll do.

I would get stuck in and do it myself but I don't have a drive way, which is really irritating because Its kinda stopped me having a go at most things.

Does anyone know if the roll pin is likely to make a difference. All my play seems to be on that control arm stemming from under the stick, I suppose if the correct bit isn't actually there then that will be the issue.

The car was owned my a woman before me, so blatantly she's had a problem with the gear stick and some knob's said, " yeah i'll fix it " and bodged a bit of metal in, prob charged her the earth too.

Yes it will, the roll pin is kind of tapered so its a really snug fit in the hole of the selector arm. Just bodging a wire in there or an ill fitting bolt will then translate to a really sloppy, shitty feeling shift with tonnes of play as it gets exaggerated at the gear stick end. Once you've popped the passenger side wheel off, its about 5 minutes to swap in another roll pin providing you use the extension bar method to reach it

Cheers mate I'll give this a mention to Gazer.
If it doesn't sort it, i think it might be the control arm with that big rubber bush underneath the stick.

    Hope its the pin though.

Quick one, rather than make a new thread...

I have Fuschs oil in my car at the min, I think i have about a litre or 2 left in the bottle, could I use this and top it up with the same viscosity semi synth oil, Halfords brand or something.
Don't want to spend loads for just a small amount of oil.

    Yeah that'll be alright

    Am i being retarded ?
I just asked Citroen parts on the phone if they have the rollpin in stock. He said he has to order it in and its 10 pounds !

I was told it was only 50 pence.

    Yeah I thought this.

I think he got his parts mixed up though.
I phoned back with a part number rather than giving him my reg. and part name and he went, " oh, Pin ? 35 pence ".

Even though before, he actually said " You mean the pin that goes through the gear selector arm " ?
  15. #15
yeah thats what you need. One thing to check is that the arm isn't worn into an oval hole, not the selector mechanism it fits on to, new roll pin wont fix that.
  16. #16
simple solution is to hit the end of the selector shaft with a mig welder --about 10mins --never cause another problem

If it is you have 2 choices. Drill the hole out and user a larger roll pin from any local engineering shop.

Or you can drill the hole out and fit a bolt instead of the roll pin.

If it is get a new selector arm, but a new roll pin will make a difference. Or as kam racing says just get it welded so it cant slip about

Ooh, yeah I see what you mean. Well judging by my gearstick it's not had a proper rollpin fitted for a while, however it wasn't this loose when I bought it. Unless this metal makeshift wire pin was fitted without me knowing.
  23. #23
I'll see how I get on with a new pin and hope it at least helps.
  24. #24
has to be a very tight fit with the bolt though mind you, even if its a got a tiny bit of play you get an awful feel to the shift

At the moment, it's worse when cold, 1st and 2nd are the worst. When it warms up its better but not great. It's always sloppy and wobbly though.
