2003 vtr

Hi guys, just bought a 2003 Silver VTR as a project car as the VTR was sorn and sat un-used. I've had various bits and pieces done by a mobile mechanic already but took the car for it's MOT test yesterday and it failed. Just wanted to run a few things past anyone who would be kind enough to help!

    1) Windscreen washer fluid pump - MOT tester said that it provides insufficient washer fluid to the windscreen, just had a look at it now and checked the pipes, jets and washer fluid level and they're all ok but there is no water being pumped through to the jets. Is it easy to fit a new washer fluid pump? If so where would you reccomend buying one from?

    2) Apparently the (filter) Fuel system component is insecure. The guy told me this would take around 15 mins to fix but i can't even find the filter which is supposedly insecure!

Any help with these 2 issues would be greatly appreciated, the other little things it failed on were nearside headlamp aim (which is perfectly fine according to another mechanic) and the nearside rear tyre tread depth being below the legal limit (which it isn't it has ample tread left on it, i think this garage was run by cowboys!).

    Cheers guys!

    Hi there and welcome!

    1. The washer pump is one of the easiest things to replace! Various guides on here/online, just have a little search for how to replace saxo mk2 washer pump and you'll be away! Bout a 20 minute job, half hour at a push.

    2. I have no idea what he is on about as for the tyre, remember its the center 3/4 of tread that its measure by

Ok i'll have a browse, thanks! If I were to tell you that looking at the tyre it doesn't look like it's done more than a few hundred miles that's why I don't understand why he failed it on that! If I get stuck again i'll let you know thank you!

the fuel filter is down the back of the car, look up under the offside wheel arch a bit under neath and you should see it - cylinder shaped thing. Its secured by a plastic ratcheted strip that clips into the underside of the body. A Cable tie should suffice.

You can thank whomever took this hi-res pic

Just cause I'm too nice http://www.google.com/search?client=...hannel=browser

Has sites involving buying and removing!
Go to halfords or other type of shop and buy a cheapy tread depth gauge and see what you think for yourself! 3/4 of the main tread, reading off the deepest parts! I say this cause the amount of people we come in saying their tyre needs replacing and we find out they've read of the wear indicator (little bumps in the tread)

Any issues, post back! I'm sure someone might pop up about the fuel filter. Is he talking about the main fuel filter?

I knew someone would appear! I was wondering just as I hit Reply, if it was the fuel filter he was talking about!

Filter straps are about £4 from eBay. Might be available through a dealer if you need one quickly.

I ordered a new one this morning, never thought of a cable tie....

just cable tie it securely to brake pipe they are solid so its okay and drivers side wheel arce you can do it from underneath the car but they are simple

Thanks for all the replies!! I've bought a new washer fluid pump ready for me to fit tomorrow and will have a look at the fuel filter as this is what he said was insecure, do i have to take the wheel arch off to see the fuel filter? Will a cable tie get it through MOT? There was also a brake imbalance as the car had been sat for so long that all 4corners had rusty discs, this was another failing on it's MOT. I've taken the car out and done some normal and harsh braking which has strippped off the rusty crust on the discs and revealed all discs in shiny new condition! The car feels like it's braking system is working alot more efficiently now, let's hope that's done the trick! I don't think I need a tyre tread gauge on this tyre that it's supposed to have failed on, I can't even get my fingers in the tread gaps to see how deep it is as there is so much tread across the whole tyre! Will let you know how I get on/come back for more help (i'm sure i'll need it!)

    Cheers!

Just an update - have cable tied the fuel filter onto the brake pipe as suggested by hobers4 and the filter now seems to be secured (fingers crossed this will go through the MOT on Wednesday). Washer pump is now fitted and working too. Will take it to a trusted local garage this time and hope for the best! Thanks for the assitance! JM
