Hi just wonering what does it feel like when a back shock absorber is on its way out or already gone. Ive got a 206 and the back end shakes at 60 or over not always tho, seems to be after been driving a while. Ive changed alloys and still does it so cant be the balance.it sort of feels like I've got a flat. Any ideas anyone? Cheers.

#2Mine is very bouncy.
-
#3What it goes bouncyer if a shocks gone?
-
#4Only going of when I had coilovers on a fiesta where the hydrolic oil had escaped it would bottom out bumps, and cause a loud bang.
-
#5Logically a "shock absorber" absorbs the bounces and stops them - so when the shocks are on their way out they won't stop the bouncing effect as quickly .... therefore a more bouncy ride ..... I think

And will more than likely bang like a bastard when going over bumps as they will bottom out and eventually fuck the internal bump stop up. -
#7Ive just drove home and noticed it is banging more over small dips in the road. Looks like new shocks then. Any recomendations for some decent shocks? Or will the ebay ones be alright? Cheers

#9Im gonna get some new shocks this weekend but not changed shocks before. So do i just car up in normal spot take wheel off undo 2 bolts and swap. Or do i need another jack somewhere supporting something to take strain off??.
-
#10If its at the rear, technically you dont need to take the wheels off but it does make it easier, Literally 2 bolts on each shock.Quote:Im gonna get some new shocks this weekend but not changed shocks before. Prepare yourself though, they WILL be ceased. -
#11Shaking coming from the back can also be Axle bearings on their way out.
my 1.5D 106 (not 206 but the suspension design is similar) the wheels used to shake at over 50mph. You could even see it in the mirror.
A shock which has gone will only cause a vibration if you hit a bump or are on a rough ish road. -
#12Is it a big job if it is the axle bearings?? Cheers
-
#13And it does it on really smooth roads thats when can feel it the most.
-
#14It's more likely to be your shock.
If it was axle bearings you'd have camber on the back wheels by now
don't want to cause a panic.
-
#15Ok im gonna do shocks and see what happens hope it aint axle. Cheers
-
#16adding on to this, if a shock bush has gone, will it clunk when u push the rear end down or is that a bearing issue? th shock seems to lag behind th movement of th axle when pushed...(got a thread opened on this issue)
-
#17could be either, a worn shock bush should be obvious upon a quick glance.
-
#18it's a little cracked n old, is a visual sign of wear a tear + what i said a good reason for new shocks?
-
#19Update on the shocks. I think the axle could.be on its way out aswell. I noticed ive got a bit of cambeer on back left wheel. Can get my fingers behind other side tyre between inner arch. And can only just on problem side. Still doin shocks first tho they are fucked.if i was to get a axle would it be easier to free it all up first then put on car and adjust to height i want?. Or put on car then adjust? It needs lowering but every mechanic i ask says it will be siezed.
-
#20Yes, it's easier to free the axles when they're off the car

Mechanics are douchebags, take it to an engineer. engineers do
mechanics just tell you the problem.

#21Another update on the axle. Just been garage and the bearings are knackered was loads of play in it. So i was wondering whats cheaper and easier, whole new axle or fix the bearings?. Mine has discs and abs sensors on it so not cheap. Been quoted 150 for axle or 65 plus vat but gotta take it off yaself.

#22Get a second hand one , mate to help and fit yourself.prob cost half your quote? Don't quote me!
Remove brakelines from car but leave stalked to axle, unbolt old axle , drop , swap brakes , put in, bleed brakes and you're good
It's an easy but long job, must make sure your new axle is in better shape! Also, don't sheer bolts , needless to say that will dampen your day!1 user thanked this post: -
#23Im gettin a second hand one for 150 its off an 02 same as mine pickin up at 2. They said if it goes not long after they will sort me another one out. And they check them for any play and that. Guy at garage said will fit it for 70 quid. Does that sound ok??.
-
#24Depends on axle age, condition and how much you trust the guys . It is a dirty job and those bolts sheer easily but for the insurance you have , I guess it's alright.1 user thanked this post:

#25One more question, im wanting to lower it so do i free it up put back how was then put on car and adjust it to height?
-
#26If you're going to lower it, fit new bearings!!!!
You can lower the beam off the car too, because the shock absorber mounting points ar on the beam.
Standard distance between the mounts is 305mm. to lower you alter that by 1/2.5 the amount. So shortening that to 285mm would see a rough lowering of 50mm?1 user thanked this post:
