intermittant power loss??

Have a mk1 vts with 54 on clock fsh and in very good con, haveing a bit of a problem with it. Only happens sometimes will be driveing along and go to accelerate and its as if the engine just dies sort of judders with no power at all for a few second's then will pick up and be fine again untill for what ever reason it wants to do it again.

    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

As said, sounds like a coil pack issue. They're about 55 quid new IIRC. Quick job to fit.

Going to swop it with my other vts see if it works befor I buy one thanks lads

this sounds familiar problem it can be a number of problems, some people have found blocked fuel filter others dodgy coolant temperature sensor it really is a mystery best advice I'd give get the multimeter out and start checking all your sensors values.

Also out of interest how often do you use it? i find with mine as its a project car and spend more time on ramps than on the road at the moment old fuel in the tank makes it splutter, fart and have hissy fits from time to time, best fix is to put about 5-10litres of new fuel in the tank before starting it, tends to solve it - just an idea

if you find the problem let us know?

Thanks for that mate the car is geting usder everyday now has had about two tanks of pertol in since it started doing it aswell so can't be the fule. I will try swoping the coil pack you let yous know

Right replace the coilpack with brand new unit on sat and the car has been fine, I drove it to work at 6.30 today and seemed fine I have just got back in from work at the car was shit! Seems to be when its cold and around 2 and ahalf revs, go to put a bit power on and it dies for a few seconds then picks back up any ideas?
  10. #10
new spark plugs perhaps, usually when a coil pack goes it takes the plugs with it, because they like to cause a major fault! but would suggest getting the multimeter out and just making sure.
  11. #11
Sparks are only about 3m old? Just been looking at my temp sensor and the plastic plug on the sensor turns by hand! Guessing that can't be good?
  12. #12
wouldn't suggest over tightening it, its only plastic. but this could be a cause for your issues
  13. #13
That shouldn't move at all should it?
  14. #14
it shouldnt move at all, unless you get a tool to the job
  15. #15
The sensor its self doesn't move its the plastic plug on the sensor that does
  16. #16
can you get a photo? been googling like a big un to try and get a photo up
  17. #17
god bless ebay! found what you are looking at, they can twist, wouldnt suggest turning anymore, doesnt look like the best of plastic.

Pic on there mate, its the green plug on top that you can turn by hand
  19. #19
there usually just wired and pushed in. like i said, dont twist it anymore, or youll be forking out for a new one, flimsy plastic by the looks of things
  20. #20
Think I am going to get a new one anyway just to be sure
  21. #21
fair enough mate, hope it works
  22. #22
So do I mate thanks will let you know
  23. #23
Still haveing power loss seems to be when the car is cold. Not driveing hard don't do that wile its cold just normal driveing geting up to speed will put a little bit of power on and it will start pulling then just die for a seconds hold your foot down and it comes back really starting to piss me off now have replace coilpack and cooling temp sensor, any ideas?
  24. #24
i had exactly the same and i put a 4.0 fpr in a sorted it mate
  25. #25
Could be a bit of a daft question mate but what is one of them?
  26. #26
its a fuel pressure regulator mate its a little round thing that pushes in the end of the fuel rail get one for next to nothing from a scrappy out of a vag 1.8t engine i tryed everything else with mine to try and sort it including new injectors worth a try

    what problem is the question
  30. #30
    Fueling.

    Try a different/new map sensor?

My 16v had bad flat spots map sensor made a hell of a difference
  31. #31
i tryed 3 different map sensors 2x coil packs which are all known working ones
    new water temp sensors
    new plugs
    new inectors
    new throttle position sensor
    new icv valve
    new fuel pump relay

and none of those solved this issue so didnt know what else to try other than fpr
  32. #32
Have you got something squashing the fuel pipe underneath the passenger seat inside the vehicle. I had this problem and turned out it was the bucket seats I had we're squashing the pipe
  33. #33
i did check lines and just painted floor in mine as its stripped and fuel lines are all fine good idea though
  34. #34
OP you have to establish if your car is running rich or lean. I'd still suggest it's a MAP or TPS problem.

I have this problem on my GTI, and it's my ECU on its way out. every sensor under the bonnet has been changed.
  35. #35
    Cam shaft sensor??
  36. #36
Mine does this, just part of its mannerisms now, got used to it! If I start it up in the morning and leave it ticking over it does it after about 5 mins even when I'm not in it, and 2 times out of 10 it will stall the car!

    You mean 1 in 5?
  38. #38
fitted a new 4bar fpr today havent really had it out on a good run yet but drove around the block and seemed fine tick over it alot better aswell, will let yous know what it is like when i have been on a good drive
  39. #39
Yeah that's what I meant! Lol!
  40. #40
Doesn't seem to of worked sick of this now! Just seems to be geting worse aswell, seems to be really jumpy and power loss at low revs
  41. #41
now you have fitted the fpr mate un plug ecu for half hour then take it for a good drive see if that makes a difference
  42. #42
Had the ecu unpluged and also had the icv out and cleaned up still the same the car has cut out on tick over a few times now really starting to boil me piss now! Some times tickes over no bother and other times its abit jumppy and cuts out after a wile. Still geting power loss hot or cold can be when u r just slowley building up speed or puting your foot down will just die for a second or two then pick up I am at a loss :s
  43. #43
Also had spark plugs out and they all seem fine non of them smelling of petrol or anything like that
  44. #44
Still haveing this problem! Don't know if it helps but my mother was driveing behind me today and said that she could smell pertol when following me the car has a 4branch and decat don't know if that matters?
  45. #45
most cars smell abit fuely mate when decatted could be fuel pump on its last legs i think thats the problem with mine as sometimes my fuel pump doesnt stop priming when i put ignition on
  46. #46
Mine does stop but some times it does prime for a wile
  47. #47
Injectors not working properly,or injector wiring split/damaged.
  48. #48
This is starting to get bad now! Car is doing it all the time. I left work drove about 5mins to a shop and it lost power twice when I got to the shop I sat out side with the car running for a few mins and the revs were all over droping really low whole car was shaking. Away went in the shop etc drove around 5mins to the motorway did it a few times on the way when I joined when to over take a car and seemed as soon as I tried to put power down it pulled for a second then just lost all power car was jumping all over cluch down then back out pulled again then nothing did this for around 1.5miles then I had to pull off

Any ideas on this? Can't afford for the car to brake down on me :s
  49. #49
sounds like fuel air mixture is not right? and car is choking itself out?
  50. #50
    Sounds like it's over-fuelling.

My guess it's because of your lambda sensor or worn out sensors like the MAP.

When you removed the spark plugs, they should NOT be black and sooty. but quite clean looking.
