Water Temperature Gauge Again.... UPDATE: Video Added

  1. #1
so my guage goes up and down 3 times, then stays down and doesn't go back up unless I restart the car, but even then, does the same thing, up and down 3 times then stays down.
was hopin that it was the sensor but having changed that, its still doing the same thing, I've also topped up the coolant. I've been told it could be my dials on the way out (hoping not) or it could be needing flushed, does anyone have any other ideas?

    Thanks

    Coolant bleed maybe?
  3. #3
hmm yeah maybe try that at the wkend, hopefully it works, the thought of changing the dials is a bit dreading
  4. #4
A bleed would do nothing mate. By the sound of things youve either got a short in the wiring loom or the earth in the clock is broken as thats what the fuel gauge does when that happens due to getting no signal.

I thinks new dials is the only way,i had a similar issue but with the petrol gauge, solved it by replacing the dials,i got one in very good condition for 25£,also,replacing it takes 20 minutes.

ahhh dammit. mite have to wait till wkend and take a proper look at the dials. was also told, if its the dials, I would have to get dials that have a lower milage than my car, as the ecu automatically uses the highest mileage of the dials that's on the car, anyone confirm this?

and thanks for the help with this! appreciated!

Nope that won't work, mileage will still be the same.

so regardless what the mileage is of the car the dials come off, it'll still read the mileage from whats on my car?

guess the mileage is programmed in the ecu or sumthin?
  9. #9
No mate, that was a bit misleading, the ecu doesn't keep track of the mileage,if for example you get dials from a car that has 110.000 miles and fit them to your car they will still be 110.000 miles, can confirm this as i changed mine a few months ago.
  10. #10
ahhh ok, so regardless of what the mileage is on the new dials, it'll read the new ones and not my own mileage?

    Yup.
Mileage is tied to the clocks, not the car.

Might be worth you removing the dials and cleaning the connectors?
  12. #12
ahh dammit, suppose I could get the clocks adjusted to the correct mileage tho.

just been told aswell to check incase the thermostat sensor is gone, bbut not really sure where the thermostat is and cant find a guide with pics :s

Managed to get a video of whats happening today. I had driven the car for about 15mins as I was on way home from work, got stopped at a set of traffic lights so I restarted the car, and then you can see, it goes up half way, then does the boucing thing before staying all the way down

    thanks again

    Green sensor controlls the ecu/icv.
Blue one is for the gauge cluster.
    Brown is the fan ecu.

was the green one that I changed, guessing wrong one?

    cheers for all the help!!
nah no worries, stuck a post in the wanted section and will check that auction site and see if I can get one.

    much appreciated again!

well that's both sensors changed, and the problems still no fixed.
also, noticed that even if the car has been left overnight in the cold, when I turn the ignition on, the guage starts to go up and down immediately, in small bits. like, up and little bit, down a bit, up a little more, down a little, then vice versa, its as if the sensor is in a bucket of water being moved. will tryn get another video

also, thinkin about it, im not sure I've heard my fan comin on at all, incase this narrows things down. goin to double check to see
  21. #21
    Dials I reckon
  22. #22
is there anyway to find out if it is the dials without having to put another set of dials in?
  23. #23
in the video it looks almost like they are calibrating themselves.
  24. #24
just doesn't go back up once the guage goes down
