gear swapping.

following on from from my 1.1 box in a vtr thread i've thought of a few questions.
Generally everyone agreed that the 1.1 box short ratios improve the acceleration but kill economy and make motor way journeys a pain.

As well as this, the box seem strong enough but some mentioned the diffs are weak.

i have a vtr box in the garage already thats ropey into 2nd.
could i put the 5th gear cog and diff from the vtr box into a 1.1 box?

iirc the differential in a 1.1 is smaller than the VTR diff so not sure it will fit, but the fifth gear should be interchangeable

Also i had a 1.1 gearbox in my vtr and it died after about 9 months, and im not a wheelspin king either

VTS box is very similar to the 1.1 box.. But you get the stronger diff / driveshafts fit properly.

Shafts not fitting properly as in the splines on the sports shafts don't go into the 1.1 box all the way. So your only using the ends of the splines.

I still use 1.1 boxes as they generally have less miles / less abuse than vts's and half the price.

Changed it the other day after 2 years / 20k+ miles of hard driving.. Only reason for changing it was because it was whining because I didn't put enough oil in.. Then ran it on engine oil for a year lol.

So yeah, not as weak as you think.. But yeah 80mph @ 4k+ is abit annoying, but even changing to a vtr 5th.. it will only knock off 500rpm or so.

^ i have a VTS box in now . Acceleration is good and 3500rpm @70mph is bearable

^ all you need to know.

I just wanted to know if the cogs can be swapped.
The shaft issue puts me off.

Yes they can be swapped but as said the RPM will hardly be any different.

Was a guide on suzukiguides - like the lowering one. Can't remember what its called lol.

It was playing on my mind.. but if i didnt have a problem in 20k+ miles I doubt i will encounter one. Full on air @ 90+ etc so definately pushed lol, All the splines was perfect on my old shafts too, so no noticable damage.

its 3k vs 4k, the difference of 48mpg and 38mpg when hauling down the motorway.

Its not just the different 5th gear, its also the final drive on the R box!
  10. #10
    Still 500 rpm difference

Actually, yeah, the VTR box has a final drive of 3.765, 1.1 box 4.268

both boxes have a 5th gear thats 0.767. I would make sod all difference, they are the same cog.
If at 6250rpm the VTR box will pull 142mph and the 1.1 box will pull 125mph its not to hard to work out at 70mph VTR 3080rpm and 1.1 box 3500rpm so yeah, actually not that much difference.

Looking again, VTS/GTI box might be best option then as i dont get the shaft/weakness issues.
