2 small wires could be the signal wires.

Get a multimeter on the battery, with the engine running it should be 13-13.5v

If it's sitting at 11v or something silly, then your alternator isn't charging.

If the light is on, with the key out, then one of your diodes have failed, which means new alternator time.

I haven't seen any Saxos in Perth for ages! lol

    Dear Craig-6,
The very " first " job you need Craig-6, is to connect a " voltmeter " onto your positive and your negative battery terminals, start your engine with the voltmeter connected to the battery. Then you need to switch " on " all of your electrical equipment ie heater blower, heated rear window, hazards, main beam headlamps etc. Then next thing you need to do then is to hold the engine revs at 3,000 rpm ( as this is when the alternator will be charging at its maximum voltage) Your voltmeter " should " be reading somewhere between minimum of 13.5 volts and to a maximum of 14.2 volts. This is for an alternator/ charging system that is functioning " correctly
Craig-6, only once you have competed this " check " can you go any further, and determine whether your alternator needs renewing etc.
To check if your battery is unserviceable or not requires a different " check "
    I hope this helps,
    Vince,
